Temporary Lower School Classroom Teacher The Opportunity:

Carolina Friends School (CFS) seeks a long-term substitute teacher for a combined 1st and 2nd-grade classroom. This is a full-time position, planned for October 2025 – April 2026. The teacher will join a Lower School staff of skilled and dedicated teachers committed to the growth of the whole child, continually developing a student-centered, mission-driven curriculum. As a member of a classroom team of three teachers, this teacher will be responsible for teaching primarily to a small group of about 10 children, focusing on reading, writing, and mathematics, and will also teach whole-class lessons in other subject areas. This teacher will co-plan and deliver a developmentally appropriate curriculum, maintain close communication with parents, and write progress reports and narrative assessments of students. Traits and Requirements:

Strong candidates will demonstrate: experience teaching at the elementary level, understanding of child development a minimum of a bachelor’s degree Knowledge of elementary curriculum and best teaching practices (e.g. a range of teaching strategies to address a variety of learning styles and needs and the ability to engage in student assessment) Proficiency with digital communication and experience with technology use in the classroom Ability to foster positive relationships with and among students and parents Commitment to continuous professional learning, and willingness to engage in professional development Ability and interest in collaborative work and co-teaching Ability to provide educational experiences that include diverse cultures and backgrounds Willingness to engage in restorative practices with students, families, and colleagues An orientation toward taking initiative and self-direction Strong writing and communication skills Ability to meet varied demands with integrity, enthusiasm, creativity, flexibility, and a sense of humor Demonstrated interest in and affinity for Quaker philosophy and the School’s mission Demonstrated commitment to understanding and exploring how power and inequality, influenced by factors such as race, class, gender, sexuality, neurodivergence, and differing physical abilities, impact our students, families, and colleagues How to
