BACKGROUND

First Presbyterian Church Weekday School (WDS) is a part-day preschool for children who are 12 months to five years old. The WDS operates from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, September through May. Located in Uptown Charlotte, the WDS has nurtured the growth of children and their families in the heart of Charlotte since 1990.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Substitute Teacher’s primary responsibility is to support the lead teacher as he/she implements developmentally appropriate lessons, as well as create a safe and nurturing classroom environment.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes, but not limited to: Offer and facilitate age-appropriate activities for the class, as well as ensure that the classroom expectations are developmentally appropriate. Treat all children with the utmost dignity and respect. Implement, and adapt, the approved WDS curriculum and classroom policies to the needs of individual children. Show awareness of children’s interests, special talents, special needs and individual learning styles. Attend to the basic needs of children including: feeding, diapering, and dressing.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes, but not limited to: Follow the daily class schedule and monthly class calendar that is posted in the classroom. Assume an equal share of the joint housekeeping responsibilities of the staff, both in the classroom and throughout the entire school. Demonstrate appropriate health and safety practices for the classroom and children.

Professionalism includes, but is not limited to: Arrive at work promptly and adhere to attendance requirements. Spend the workday effectively and efficiently. Engage in work-related activities or tasks while in paid working status. Employees may take care of personal matters so long as it is incidental, does not negatively affect their work responsibilities, and is never done when the employee is responsible for children. Maintain the required teacher-student ratios and call for a float when assistance is necessary. Unauthorized absence from campus and/or use of personal cell phones while in a paid working status is not acceptable. Cooperate with coworkers, supervisors, and Church and Schools staff. Respect the property of others and the property of the Church and Schools. Use Church and Schools property only for legitimate work purposes. Respect the rights of others. Be courteous toward coworkers, members of the congregation and their families, children, parents, and approved visitors.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS A

high school diploma or equivalent. Prefer BS in Education or similar education. One year of prior work experience in a similiar role preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift at least 30 pounds. Ability to move freely in and out of school settings while working with young children. Requires bending, sitting, standing, walking, lifting and carrying. Failure to act in a professional manner, and/or perform position and classroom management responsibilities will be addressed as set out in the Disciplinary Procedures in section I.B.2. of the First Presbyterian Church and Schools Employee Handbook.
