Located in the Philadelphia suburbs, the School has two campuses. The Middle & Upper Schools are located just outside of West Philadelphia in Wynnewood, and the Lower School is on our Old Gulph Road campus in the heart of Wynnewood. Lower School Building Substitute Friends’ Central Lower School (grades Nursery-5th) seeks a dedicated, enthusiastic Building Substitute for a full-time position starting in August 2025. Ideal candidates will demonstrate knowledge of and experience in hands-on and integrated learning, be highly motivated, hard-working, and collaborative, demonstrate a desire to learn, show initiative, and have a sense of humor. This position is for the school year, with responsibilities from August 2025 through June 2026. It is an exempt position and will be under the supervision of the Lower School Principals. The Building Substitute reports to the Lower School daily. They are assigned a classroom or position to cover on a short-term or long-term basis, depending on the specific coverage needed. This could include any grade level (Nursery through 5th grade), specialist classroom, or other coverages as assigned. The Building Substitute must be flexible and nimble to account for the most frequent daily subbing responsibilities, but must also be prepared to cover a longer-term absence if necessary. Classroom Responsibilities Manage the classroom routines, procedures, and schedule as assigned by the teacher who needs coverage. Carry out the assigned lesson plans and supervisory duties (including before school, lunch and recess duties, and/or dismissal procedures). Uphold the classroom expectations and demonstrate clear, calm, and affirming classroom management using Responsive Classroom, as well as a Quaker ethos in line with the school’s mission. Report back to the teacher/colleague of the class(es) covered to ensure the plans left were fulfilled and share any important information for the subsequent classes. Communicate effectively and in a timely way with administration, Support Services, and/or other colleagues if an issue or support is needed in the classroom that is being covered. Develop positive working relationships with all community members, students, families, and colleagues. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise Early Care in the Lower School Cover a morning and/or afternoon supervisory duty to support the arrival and dismissal of Lower School students. Cover the supervisory duty (recess, lunch, or arrival/dismissal) for the teacher who needs coverage on a given day. Support childcare on faculty/staff in-service and conference days during the year (regular school hours).
