Permanent Substitute Secondary English Teacher
REPORTS TO
High School Principal and Assistant Principal
QUALIFICATIONS
Possess a valid Pennsylvania Secondary English Teaching Certificate Possess 3.0 or higher QPA Possess proof of ongoing professional or educational experience Possess outstanding verbal and written communication skills Possess computer literacy
JOB GOALS
To develop in each student proficiency in the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship To develop appreciation for good literature of all types To motivate students to read widely for information and recreation To develop standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media To discover and develop special talents of students in the field of English To establish positive relationships with students, parents/guardians, and other staff members in the high school.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaches content and skills in English language, literature, composition, reading, and listening to secondary students, utilizing the approved course of study adopted by the South Fayette Township School District Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district Adapts English material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity level of students; maintains required inventory records Develops lesson plans and instructional materials that foster and enhance learning Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction Adapts the curriculum and differentiates instruction to meet the needs of the individual student Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions based on a variety of mass media and classical and contemporary literature Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas Evaluates each student’s progress in English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) Encourages and emphasizes writing through the use of frequent prompts and high-quality opportunities for students to demonstrate a variety of writing styles; evaluates writing using holistic and summative rubrics Instructs and assists all students in conducting research and completing research papers and projects Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports Communicates with parents/guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and interpret the school program Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day Works with students and other classroom teachers in coordinating entries in essay contests and other enrichment activities Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers Administers or monitors group tests and/or standardized tests in accordance with the district’s testing program Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities Checks and responds to e-mail and voice mail daily Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities Demonstrates computer literacy by providing all correspondence and written documentation using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel/Access, Google Suite) Demonstrates computer literacy in using the administrative software program effectively to maintain and retrieve student information and attendance data and to maintain student grades and performance assessments in an electronic grade book Shows a willingness to develop and teach online courses, online tutoring, and participate in associated training and professional development Utilizes the learning management system and other technologies to engage students and enhance instructional practices for students Focuses on new project-based learning opportunities and works collaboratively with the Chair and Administration to grow and develop these opportunities Focuses on digital literacy and making students twenty-first century learners When required as per the teacher schedule, works as part of a co-teaching team in planning, preparing and delivering lessons utilizing a co-teaching model of instruction.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the South Fayette Township Board of Education and the South Fayette Education Association. This position is anticipated to be needed for the entire 2025-2026 school year.

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the building principal and communicated to the superintendent for review.
