Under direct supervision of the assigned instructional personnel, the purpose of the position is to provide general administrative support in the assigned subject matter, requiring general knowledge of basic classroom programs and procedures. Employee assists students with educational needs, individual and/or special needs. Position may be assigned to a specific area and perform a broad array of generalized administrative support functions. Work includes assisting with course delivery, administration of tests, and the tabulation and submission of students’ grades. Performs related work as directed.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. Assists assigned instructor with classroom preparation and coursework delivery, e.g., sorting, counting, filing, clerical duties. Assists instructor in maintaining classroom order and discipline. Communicates class/course objectives, standards and requirements for successful achievement with the direction and assistance of the instructor. Assists in administration of tests, e.g., FCAT, Florida Writes. Assists students in small groups or individually, in completing assignments or classroom activities, under teacher supervision and direction, and this may include physical education and other activities. Assists students with restroom use. May include other health related duties or transfers, catheterization, and/or diaper changing, following appropriate training. Performs lunchroom duty including general clean-up, maintaining discipline and assisting students with special needs, which may include feeding. Escorts or assists students to and from various rooms and buildings on school campus, may include getting on or off school bus. Provides communication link between contact teacher and LEP student and parents by using home language as appropriate. Provides guidance and assistance to students as directed, in order to ensure appropriate assimilation of class/course content, supporting student success and achievement. Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to understand, follow and lead written and oral instructions. Ability to effectively lead/supervise a group comprised of students engaged in carrying out classroom activities/functions. Knowledge of business English and spelling; knowledge of basic math. Knowledge of academic discipline being delivered. Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing. Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines. Ability to perform routine typing and basic computer operations, i.e., data entry, word processing and records retrieval. Ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update and maintain various records and files. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, instructors and students. Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion. Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic; Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to carry heavy objects such as special equipment (up to 40 pounds) for the disabled student, a disabled student (weight will vary depending on student’s size), carry files, books etc. Ability to sit on the floor or stand for long periods of time with children, stoop to retrieve student off floor, walk to and from classes. Ability to assist disabled students with transfer from wheelchair to toilet or changing table in limited space. Ability to work flexible hours when necessary for the efficient operation of the site. Knowledge of basic School District work policies and guidelines; Knowledge of site practices and procedures.
Requirements:
Must possess an Associate’s degree or higher, two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education; sixty (60) college credit hours from an accredited institution, or an acceptable score on the State mandated Paraprofessional Exam. Ability to perform general clerical support functions to include basic knowledge of office equipment and standard office procedures, and a demonstrated aptitude for working with children; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. No physical limitations are permissible that would preclude lifting students, pushing wheelchairs, spending time outdoors, or any of the other necessary skills and abilities.
