Head of Lower School Summary of Position We believe that good teachers set high standards for their students and then do everything they can to help them achieve those standards. The Benjamin School is looking for teachers who will help our students become self-directed, independent learners with superior academic collegiate skills. The ideal candidate will be able to incorporate multiple teaching styles and use varied approaches with the students and material. This person must have the desire to work with young students in a challenging, college-preparatory school environment and should possess strong interpersonal and written communication skills. Qualified candidates should demonstrate a passion for education, a love of teaching lower school students, intellectual curiosity, strong communication skills, the ability to work within a team, skills to engage and inspire students in the pursuit of learning, and a commitment to ongoing professional development. The person filling this position should be comfortable teaching elementary school-level classes in all aspects of a lower school curriculum. Key Expectations of all TBS employees: Demonstrates support of the school’s mission and policies Consistently models The Benjamin School values Builds positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues by establishing effective communication through collaboration, listening, responsiveness, openness, availability, and approachability Takes initiative and ownership in displaying a positive work ethic and behaviors, and encourages this attitude in others Maintains proficiency in the field through personal and professional development that strengthens the role and the school Essential Functions Member of the teaching faculty, whose primary responsibility is to work with his/her Lead teacher in implementing the total curriculum and supporting the students in his/her care. Teaches occasional whole-group lessons as directed by the Lead Teacher. Works independently with individual students and groups of students as directed by the Lead Teacher. Assists his/her teaching partner in preparing lesson materials and centers. Handles discipline issues as they arise at lunch, recess, and in the classroom, following the classroom discipline plan and the Lower School discipline plan. Actively involved in the supervision of students in the classroom and during recess, lunch, dismissal, and other times throughout the day. Attends training sessions as directed by the Lead teacher and/or a member of the administration. Attends all faculty meetings. Completes all requirements of The Benjamin School Professional Development Plan. Evaluated yearly by the appropriate Grade/Dept. Chair and the Head of Lower School, or other administrator designated by the Head of Lower School. Reports to the Lead Teacher and the Head of Lower School.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to prioritize and work independently and address several challenges simultaneously. Possession of a pleasant and collaborative style in the workplace, including a professional attitude. Ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment. Well-versed in technology, Google Workspace software suite, and office equipment related to the position. Ability to maintain confidential information. Effective managerial techniques and approaches, positive leadership style. Ability to prioritize and delegate tasks. Education and Experience A bachelor’s degree in education or a related field of child development is required.
Physical and Work Requirements:
Prolonged periods of sitting and standing Frequent movement about the classroom and lift and/or move up to 15 pounds Ability to work more than 8 hours a day, as well as evening and weekend hours as necessary for events and projects Travel required for meetings, events, and professional development Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.
