Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Provides individually oriented instruction and guidance to students assigned to the in-school suspension program. Assists the principal in the implementation of the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention Support plan to support the district’s mission.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This job has/has no supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Provides and facilitates individual and group activities designed to assist ISS students in:
Accepting responsibility for their behavior;
Changing that behavior; and
Developing and carrying out plans designed to increase self-management skills.
Provides supportive instructional services by:
Assisting students who may need help in completing daily classroom assignments or in applying essential academic skills;
Coordinating students’ classroom assignments with their regular classroom teachers to assure continuity of classroom assignments;
Maintains discipline in the ISS room along with the structure established for the ISS Program; and
Coordinates with student support staff in order to provide the services needed. Student support staff are defined as school counselor, school social worker, and school psychologist.
Provides assistance to student support staff in implementing a comprehensive program of alternative strategies designed to prevent and minimize the frequency of inappropriate student behavior:
Refers to support staff those students who are in need of further counseling;
Works cooperatively with staff to assure that the school system’s due process procedures are followed if a special education student is to be considered for placement in the ISS Program; and
Maintains current records regarding students’ academic and behavioral progress, attendance, and other written information required for the school system and the state.
Completes and submits as required by the building principal such reports and other information required for program implementation and evaluation.
Takes precautions to protect records, materials, and equipment.
Maintains regular attendance and follow procedures established by the Principal if illness necessitates being absent.
Meets the requirements of the classroom paraprofessional job description in the context of the In School Suspension Program.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of an Associate degree, the equivalent of 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours from an accredited institution.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise children
Basic knowledge of childhood growth and development
Computer proficiency and ability to work effectively in a learning environment
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions
Demonstrated ability to work well with students and staff in a professional manner.
Ability to be flexible and adapt as needed between in-person learning environments
Knowledge of school safety & security procedures
Flexible and can de-escalate potentially controversial situations
Can work independently and in a team setting
Attention to detail and organized.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

GaPSC Paraprofessional Certification

Salary/Terms/Benefits:

182 day work year; 7.5 hours per day

Salary:

Grade 34: Hourly (placement on salary schedule based on years or experience). Up to ten (10) years allowed. The stated salary range reflects the opportunity for pay over the course of the employee’s tenure. The top pay is not a potential starting salary.
