GENERAL DESCRIPTION

DESCRIBING ROLE
): The Assistant Department Head provides special education leadership, including overall insight of staff and programming at the high school.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS
: Master’s Degree or higher in education administration, special education or related field Massachusetts DESE licensure as an Administrator and Special Educator Three or more years of experience as an administrator Demonstrated knowledge of special education regulations Thorough understanding of achievement assessments and ability to administer and/or interpret them Ability to effectively supervise, evaluate, coach and mentor teachers, aides, counselors and specialists Ability to handle multitude of varying and complex issues Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to use technology effectively Demonstrated organizational skills
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
: Experience supervising and/or working with special education staff Experience working in a large school district Innovative approach to programming
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
(NOT
LIMITED TO
): Organize, supervise and evaluate special education staff members Supervise the development of individual education programs for special education students Attend special education meetings Assist the department head in the handing of day-to-day problems that arise within the department Assist in scheduling special education supports Assist in scheduling special education meetings Monitor and provide appropriate consultation services for the department Other duties as needed
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment:
Majority of work is performed in a school/classroom environment. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear. The teacher is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch and/or kneel. The teacher is occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building.
