Position Description
TITLE:
Special Education Paraprofessional
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Must hold at least an Associate’s degree.
2.Must have prior successful experience working with students with disabilities including students with autism, knowledge of assistive technology devices, and familiarity with Special Education laws.
3.Must have strong communication skills and the ability to interpret language in a student’s IEP.
4.Must demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team or independently.
5.May have such alternatives to the above as the Superintendent Director deems appropriate and acceptable.

JOB GOAL
To work with academic and vocational instructors to develop class strategies and implement individualized instructions to meet the needs of each in each individual student within the program.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide assistance to students identified with disabilities.
- Tutor and assist children individually, in small groups, and within the classroom setting to help master assignment and reinforce concepts presented by teachers.
- Observe students’ performance, and record relevant data to assess progress.
- Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
- Monitor the use of special modifications or accommodations for students for students with disabilities with their academic, vocational, and/or special education classes.
- Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or role-playing methods.
- Modify and assist with the preparation of lesson materials, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.
- Assist the vocational and classroom teachers in instruction, activities, creating materials that will facilitate necessary accommodations, and implement modifications for planned instruction or assessment.
- Prepare tools and support such as summary sheets, task sheets, etc. for students with disabilities and submit outlines to teachers for review.
- Use computers, audio-visual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
- Provide students identified with special needs with assistive devices, supportive technology, and provide assistance accessing the facilities.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials.
- Monitor student achievement and/or needs and communicate identified concerns and/or observations regarding student needs to the classroom teachers, the Director of Student Support Services, special education inclusion teachers and/or the student’s IEP liaison.
- Persist, at all times, in a professional, pleasant manner of respect for the student with disabilities and in working in the domain of the teacher/instructor of record.
- Maintain a daily/weekly plan book to record supported classes and students.
- Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
- Maintain confidentiality of information concerning student and parents.
- Perform other tasks or duties assigned by the Director of Student Support Services.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position may require long periods of standing and sitting. The individual may be exposed to ultra-violet lights as are found in computer monitors and copying equipment. The individual may be exposed to various hazards in the building.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The work year is 182 days. This included the day prior to the opening day of school, Tour or PD Day, and the 180 school days. Compensation will be established by the Superintendent-Director in accordance with the applicable salary schedule.
Fringe benefits are accordance with District policy.
