TEACHER ASSISTANT IN SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSROOMS

QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate’s degree from a community college; two years of work at a senior college, or passing score on the state test
- Satisfactory completion of school district’s pre-employment test requirements
- Ability and desire to work well with young children and staff
- Ability to follow directions

- Assigned Special Education Teacher and Principal

- Students as assigned by the teacher

JOB SUMMARY
- The basic function of this position is to assist in providing a well-organized and smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program of the special educational department and available resource materials.

JOB DESCRIPTION
- Follows directions of the building-level principal and classroom teacher.
- Attends and participates in staff development activities.
- Follows school and district policies and procedures.
- Promotes a positive image of the district to the public.
- Models good reading, writing and speaking skills for students.
- Works harmoniously with staff and students
- Follows daily schedule as outlined by the teacher/principal.
- Reinforces teacher instruction in academic areas.
- Maintains confidentiality related to students with disabilities.
- Assists in small group sessions with reading, math and other academic areas.
- Assists in preparing materials.
- Follows the district’s policy on overtime and the requirements of the Wage and Hour Act.
- Follows the district’s fixed asset policy.
- Other duties as assigned by the teacher and/or principal related to the students in the class.
- Assists in the fostering and promotion of a positive school climate.
- Maintains a professional demeanor during all interactions between colleagues, parents, students and administration.
- Ability to lift, change and feed students that are unable to perform these tasks independently.
