POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction and supervision of the Childcare Director, the Assistant Teacher will support the Lead Teacher in the delivery of a developmentally appropriate curriculum for young children in a licensed early childhood care setting. This role involves working directly with children, assisting in classroom activities, maintaining a safe and nurturing environment, and helping meet the educational, social, emotional, and physical needs of each child. The Assistant Teacher plays a vital role in creating a positive, structured, and engaging learning environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Classroom Support:
  • Assist the Lead Teacher in implementing daily lesson plans, ensuring that activities are engaging and developmentally appropriate for the children.
  • Help prepare classroom materials and set up activities.
Child Interaction:
  • Provide direct care and supervision of children, promoting positive interactions and supporting their social, emotional, and cognitive development.
  • Assist children with daily routines such as meals, toileting, and nap time.
Supervision & Safety:
  • Maintain a safe and clean classroom environment.
  • Ensure that children are always supervised and that safety protocols are followed at all times.
Behavioral Support:
  • Assist in managing classroom behavior using positive guidance techniques.
  • Redirect children as needed and encourage appropriate behavior through positive reinforcement.

Communication with

Families:
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with children’s families.
  • Provide updates on children’s progress and behavior as directed by the Lead Teacher.
Health & Hygiene:
  • Assist children with personal hygiene tasks and ensure that the classroom maintains high standards of cleanliness.
  • Follow health and safety procedures to prevent the spread of illness.
Documentation & Recordkeeping:
  • Help with documentation, including attendance records, incident reports, and observations of children’s development.
  • Ensure accurate records are kept for each child.
Professional Development:
  • Participate in required in-service training, workshops, and meetings as directed by the facility and in accordance with North Carolina licensing regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • An Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Child Development, or a related field is preferred.
  • Must meet the North Carolina Assistant Teacher qualifications as per state regulations.
Experience:
  • Experience working in a licensed child care facility or early childhood setting is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience working with children ages 2 years-5years is beneficial.
Certifications:
  • Required:

    CPR and First Aid certifications (or obtain within 60 days of employment)

  • Completion of required in-service training as outlined by North Carolina child care regulations.
Skills:
  • Basic knowledge of child development and early childhood education principles.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Compassionate, patient, and attentive to the needs of young children.
