STATEMENT OF JOB
An employee in this class performs any combination of classroom duties to assist teaching staff. The employee must have the ability to execute details of the work according to general, broad based instructions, and be able to adapt to frequent and varying changes in work. The employee provides guidance and coaching to students, and requires the operation of various media and technology equipment such as computer, television, VCR, cassette player, overhead projector, laminator, copy machine and various other office equipment. This higher level is distinguished from Teacher Assistants-Exceptional Children due to the advanced level of knowledge requirement and the variety and complexity of work performed. The EC Specialist is assigned to schools and classrooms that have children that require intensive physical, emotional and behavioral attention. The employee assists teaching staff with the implementation of student’s I.E.P. (Individual Education Plan), assists in maintaining data therein, carrying out special needs to meet the goals of the I.E.P. or medical/behavioral conditions, and is actively involved with day-to-day behavior management and/or possible physical restraint of students. Employees assist students in meeting their basic daily needs, such as feeding, personal hygiene, special medical procedures/equipment and administering medications, etc. Because of the nature of the work, the employee may be exposed to human blood and body fluids, and is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. The employee is subject to work both inside and outside, and varied work environments. Work is performed under the supervision of the classroom teacher and is evaluated through conferences and observation, and through the quality and quantity of the work performed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Discusses assigned duties with classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts. Assists classroom teacher with implementation of student’s I.E.P. (Individual Education Plan) and assists in maintaining data therein, and carrying out special needs to meet the goals of the I.E.P. or medical/behavioral conditions. Performs duties as assigned in such areas as the principal’s office, classrooms, guidance office, media center, computer labs, or other special area assignments. Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids. Supervises groups to and in the cafeteria, library, playground, restrooms and other areas as assigned. Presents subject matter to students, utilizing variety of methods and techniques as directed by the teacher. Operates learning aids and technological equipment including computers. Assists others in the use of computer programs (teachers and students). Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts. Prepares, administers, grades student assignments, and assists with filing of student records and/or work. Assist students in meeting their basic daily needs, such as feeding, personal hygiene, special medical procedures/equipment and administering medications Assists teacher in preparation of reports and/or materials. Assists in conferring with parents on progress of students. Assists in maintaining cleanliness and general upkeep of classroom. Assists other staff in the department, as requested. Performs related duties as required.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Knowledge of basic needs and developmental stages of children. Knowledge of typical behavioral patterns and appropriate techniques for behavior modification and crisis intervention. Ability to follow oral and written instruction. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to perform simple arithmetic. Ability to operate various media and technology equipment such as computer, television, VCR, cassette player, overhead projector, laminator, copy machine and various other office equipment. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and parents. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, employees, and the general public.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum of three years of experience in employee benefits procedures preferred Ability to maintain effective working relationships Thorough knowledge of office practices and employee benefit procedures Minimum of three years of data processing experience preferred Experience in operating a data terminal/work station 7 years of experience in Microsoft Excel
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, hearing, talking, and repetitive motions. While performing the responsibility of this job the employee is regularly expected to stand and walk and sometimes has to stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
