Job Description

NATURE OF WORK

Under general supervision, the Teacher Assistant provides instructional, behavioral, and administrative support to enhance student achievement and well-being. This role has evolved to include the integration of digital tools, responsive classroom practices, and collaboration with professional staff to implement inclusive and equitable learning strategies. The employee supports individual and small group instruction, fosters a positive classroom environment, and may be assigned specialized duties based on school and student needs. In addition, this position includes responsibilities as a licensed school bus driver to support student transportation needs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Collaborates with teachers to deliver engaging, student-centered instruction aligned to curriculum goals, including the integration of technology platforms and learning applications.
Monitors student behavior and engagement; assists in implementing behavior support plans; promotes social-emotional learning and a culture of respect.
Provides academic support through reteaching, intervention activities, and the facilitation of small-group or individual instruction under teacher direction.
Uses formative assessment tools and instructional strategies to reinforce and support student learning.
Assists with classroom management, supervision, and safety both in and outside the classroom—including hallways, playgrounds, cafeterias, field trips, and school-sponsored events.
Supports implementation of accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs, 504s, or other special plans.
Performs clerical and instructional preparation tasks such as grading, data entry, attendance tracking, classroom displays, and material preparation.
Assists with student physical needs, including feeding, toileting, and mobility support, as necessary.
Operates a school bus on assigned routes or field trips, ensuring student safety and compliance with transportation regulations.
Participates in professional development, school-wide initiatives, and district training as directed.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervising teacher or principal.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

A minimum of 48 semester hours of college coursework or an Associate’s degree.
Must possess or obtain a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus certification within four (4) months of employment.
Previous experience working with children in an educational setting preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Proficient with classroom technology tools including computers, tablets, document cameras, interactive whiteboards, and learning management systems.
Able to lift up to 25 pounds and support students with physical needs.
Capable of using both verbal and written communication to follow and convey instructions.
Demonstrates flexibility, patience, and cultural competency when supporting diverse learners.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of instructional practices and daily classroom operations.
Awareness of trauma-informed care and positive behavioral interventions.
Familiarity with emergency response procedures and safety guidelines.
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative educational team.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
