The salary for this position is based upon the successful applicant’s years of service in the NC State Retirement System in the same or similar position. Experience outside of this system is not recognized for pay purposes. For current Lincoln County School employees, this position will be paid according to the current Lincoln County Schools’ pay scale.
Qualifications & Requirements
High school diploma or GED
Must be able to pass a drug test, background check, and TB test before starting employment.
Meet the following requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA):
hold an Associate’s degree or higher (in any area); or 30 semester hours; (in any area) or a passing score as noted below on the WorkKeys Test offered at Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC)

    Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information
    Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with parents, students, teachers, staff, and administrators
    Complete Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training yearly and maintain Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.

Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects
Duties/ Responsibilities
Under general supervision, a Behavioral Support Assistant (BSA) will perform a variety of tasks in assisting students, staff (teachers, counselors, admin, etc.).
The Behavioral Support Assistant (BSA) provides individualized behavioral support while utilizing positive research-based interventions to teach students how to appropriately manage their own behavior. In addition, the BSA models the interventions with teachers and assists the teachers in gaining knowledge on how to work with the identified students. When necessary, the BSA works with staff and students to de-escalate crisis situations that may arise from inappropriate behavior.
The employee provides support to the teacher/counselor in the instruction of students
Changes in daily schedule will be determined by administration as needed.
Document the research-based interventions utilized to support (IEP goals, Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
Implement and maintain the use of positive behavior supports.
Assist in the implementation and monitoring of the student’s behavior, any behavior system, and the Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
Implement and maintain a data collection system to assist in progress monitoring students’ behavior
Aid the student during academic activities; checking and assisting with correction of assignments, and providing individualized instruction for student/s after the teacher has provided materials and lesson plans for the assistant to follow.
Assist the teacher in planning and preparing activities involving the assigned student/s and his/her behavioral expectations or instruction.
Communicate first with the students’ classroom teacher and School Administrator when concerns or issues arise.
Conduct all responsibilities in a professional manner; communication, dress, behavior, socialization, use of technology, attendance, adherence to district and school policies, and acknowledgement of administrative authority.
Maintain confidentiality regarding the student and student records.
Follow school and district guidelines regarding crisis situations.
The employee provides support to the teachers/counselor in the instruction of students
Follow specific instructions, precedents and established policy
Problems are solved through the exercise of judgment in selecting the best course of action to be taken
The work is performed under the limited supervision
Demonstrates various instructional activities
Skill to make learning aids/ visuals
Keeps students on task
Monitor students with assigned behavior expectations
Explains expected conduct and achievement
Attends workshops as necessary
Teaches citizenship, social skills and respect for others
Reconciles minor student conflicts
Reports to supervisor significant change or lack of change in student behavior
Other duties as assigned by administration
