Role:
The Assistant Superintendent for Special Education Services is a vital leadership position reporting directly to the Superintendent. This role is responsible for accelerating improved student outcomes for MCS’s students with special needs by directing, monitoring, and strengthening programs, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The Assistant Superintendent coordinates efforts across agencies, specialists, and internal teams to provide necessary services, eliminate achievement disparities, and ensure college and career readiness for students with special needs. This role leads comprehensive planning, policy development, and system-wide leadership to ensure equitable access to high-quality special education and related services.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Student Success:
Set a clear vision, establish goals for the Exceptional Children department, cultivate a district-wide commitment to high standards for all students, and strategically allocate Special Education supports.
Instructional Leadership:
Direct and supervise the Exceptional Children department, plan and implement comprehensive programs for students with disabilities, apply research and best practices to improve service delivery, and collaborate with school and district leaders to build support systems.
Compliance & Systems:
Work with state and federal agencies to ensure program compliance, assess departmental effectiveness, establish quality controls, create proactive systems for school feedback, use data for decision-making and problem-solving, and provide technical assistance on legal mandates.
Talent Management & Professional Learning:
Supervise, mentor, and provide professional growth opportunities for staff, support recruitment and evaluation of special educators, and partner with central office to develop district-wide professional development in inclusive practices.

Ability to build and lead effective teams, assess and develop staff skills, promote professional learning, and manage resources strategically.
Minimum Training & Experience:
Proven track record of improving academic outcomes for students with special needs. Master’s degree in special education, educational administration, or a related field (Doctorate preferred). Four years of supervisory/administrative/management experience in special education or a related field. Experience as a teacher and/or school leader with documented success in improving student outcomes. Knowledge of best practices, current national trends, and research for diverse learners. Eligible for NC license in Exceptional Children and a valid NC driver’s license at the time of hire.
