The Teacher Assistant supports the Site Administrator in providing a safe, engaging, and enriching environment for students outside of regular school hours. This position is located at our ALA Coastal Campus. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assist in supervising students during before and after school program hours, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Engage students in age appropriate activities, including games, crafts, and outdoor play.
- Provide support to students with their homework assignments, answering questions and offering guidance as needed.
- Help students stay organized and focused on completing their homework tasks.
- Assist in maintaining a positive and inclusive environment by promoting respectful behavior and conflict resolution skills among students.
- Assist in setting up and organizing the classroom or activity areas before or after program hours.
- Help clean up and sanitize classroom materials and equipment at the end of each session.
- Maintain open and effective communication with parents/guardians regarding their child’s participation, behavior, and any concerns that arise.
- Relay important information from parents/guardians to the site coordinator as needed.
- Support the Site Coordinator in planning and implementing special projects, events, or enrichment activities for students.
- Assist in maintaining accurate attendance records for students and staff members.
- Help document student progress, behavior incidents, and any other relevant information for reporting purposes.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities to enhance job skills and knowledge.
- Seek feedback from Site Coordinator to improve performance and effectiveness in the role.
- Familiarize yourself with the program’s safety protocols and emergency procedures, including fire drills and evacuation plans.
- Assist in ensuring that students understand and follow safety rules and procedures during program hours.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to maintain a safe and supportive environment for children. Ensuring children are properly supervised during activities, breaks, and transitions.
- Knowledge of safety protocols, including maintaining child safety in the classroom, playground, and during field trips.
- Ability to manage children’s behavior using positive reinforcement and redirection, while maintaining a calm and patient demeanor.
- Skill in helping children resolve conflicts and disagreements, using strategies that promote social and emotional growth.
- Help maintain a positive, welcoming, and inclusive atmosphere where all children feel valued and respected.
- Clear and concise communication with children, parents, and team members, both in writing and verbally.
- Ability to communicate with parents, providing feedback on their child’s behavior, participation, and progress.
- Ability to collaborate with the site coordinator and other staff to ensure the program runs smoothly.
- Ability to work with different age groups, adjusting your approach to meet the needs of the children you are assisting.
- Support the creation and implementation of age-appropriate educational and recreational activities (arts, crafts, outdoor play, games, etc.).
- Ability to manage time effectively, ensuring that activities run on schedule and transitions are smooth.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Pass Applicable Background Check
- At least 21 years of age or older
- CPR/AED/First Aid certification
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree or higher in early childhood education, child development, or a related field
- 1-2 years of experience working with children in after-school programs, childcare, summer camps, or educational environments
- Experience assisting teachers with lesson planning, classroom management, or activity Implementation is a plus
