DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Paraprofessional in this role will work directly under the guidance of the Primary Project Program and report directly to a mental health professional at the building level. Primary Project is a national evidence-based program that helps children in Pre-K through third grade adjust to school, gain confidence, and social skills, and focus on learning. Through play, Primary Project addresses children’s school adjustment difficulties and increases their chances for success.
Primary Project Paraprofessionals work in collaboration with the Department of Student Support Services, School Building Leaders, Teachers, and School Social Workers to ensure scholars improve upon self-confidence, social skills, learning skills, and other school-related competencies. Primary Project Paraprofessionals will receive training related to social-emotional learning, skill building, and the foundation of child play to ensure they are able to fulfill their job responsibilities.
Primary Project Applicants must exude personal warmth, enjoy working with children, be reliable and adaptable, and have the ability to empathize. Evaluation procedures will follow standard district policies. In addition, specific Primary Project evaluation procedures may be implemented.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Ø Carry a minimum of 12 students on the caseload for every 15 hours of employment.
Ø Participate in ongoing professional learning related to the Primary Project.
Ø Participate in weekly feedback supervision with a building-based mental health professional.
Ø Establishes rapport and warm, meaningful relationships with children assigned to the Primary Project to reduce children’s problem behaviors in the classroom and elsewhere and to improve and enhance their behavior, educational performance, and social relationships.
Ø Uses conversation, creative play materials, games, modeling, coaching, and other approaches to achieve prescribed goals for individual children experiencing school adaptation problems of a behavioral and/or educational nature.
Ø Communicates with children and establishes an atmosphere to encourage their expression of feelings and ideas, details effectively and constructively with such feelings and ideas.
Ø Helps to build confidence and self-esteem through one-to-one and/or group interactions.
Ø Provides feedback to the mental health team, principal, teachers, and other school personnel, and, at the discretion of the team, to parents about the progress and behavior of the child.
Ø Participates with school personnel and/or consultants in assignment, progress, termination, and other conferences concerning children, both in the schools and in community agencies.
Ø When indicated by the team, meet with other school personnel to gain additional relevant information about referred children to better understand their current behavior.
Ø Write appropriate progress notes and summary notes for children and complete program measures/data for Primary Project children.
Ø Participates in regularly scheduled, individual and/or group supervision by a team member; a variety of methods may be used to facilitate supervision, for example, discussion based upon associate notes, opportunities to sit in on the associate sessions with children, and, with appropriate permission, audio, and videotapes; supervisory modes are determined by the team.

Ø Willingness to participate in ongoing professional learning and feedback.
Ø Excellent writing skills are required.
Ø A high school diploma or equivalency.
