POSITION GOAL
To work closely with one or a few special needs pupils regularly to provide them with the physical help and academic and emotional support they need to gain the maximum benefits possible from the District’s Special Education Program.
ESSENTIAL
DUTIES and
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist the student(s) to whom they are assigned with physical tasks, such as putting on and taking off outerwear, moving from room to room, and using the lavatory. Listens to the student(s) in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks and helps guide them to accomplish teacher-directed tasks. Under the supervision of the Special Education Teacher, works with small groups of students to reinforce materials initially introduced by the teacher. Establish, as fully as possible, a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement. Distributes and collects papers and other material for instruction. Catalogues and files instructional materials; maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment; and prepares orders or requisitions for needed materials. Reads to the student(s), drills student lessons, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with students. Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned to them, as determined by their needs (such as assistive devices or physical supports) or by the teacher. Foster’s independent behavior and performance in all areas of life at school. Operates classroom equipment for instructional purposes. Explicitly follows the teacher’s instructions. Discuss ideas on methods and content with the teacher before changing any directions for the students. Consistently reinforces the discipline code set up by the teacher and the School District with the exact expectations and consequences. Learn all aspects of duties involved in managing and operating the classroom (e.g., lunch count, attendance, etc.). Maintains a neat classroom appearance, fostering a good learning environment. Discuss any differences of opinion with the teacher first regarding classroom set-up, designated duties, etc. Follow the chain of command when submitting comments or complaints. Teacher

Performs various related duties as assigned. Problems in support and regular classes should be discussed and covered with the Special Education Teachers to resolve any conflicts that may arise. Frontline Absences by the paraeducator should be reported to the building principal’s secretary by the established procedures for calling off due to illness. Early departures and late arrivals should be discussed with the Special Education Teachers, and the appropriate building administrator should grant permission. We may need to track Data to show progress toward behavior and/or academic goals (in both regular classrooms and learning support classrooms). Accompanies an assigned support student to the regular classroom and to any area of the building or outside area that the class may be moving to as part of a lesson or to reinforce instruction. Assists support students in teacher-directed activities. Assist/accompany the student with bathroom needs. Organizes and takes notes for assigned support student(s) included in academic subjects based upon their IEPs and reports back to the Special Education Teacher any information about the student’s progress or lack of progress or any difficulties the student may be experiencing. This exchange of information will enable the Special Education Teacher to better coordinate with the Regular Education Teacher in adapting and implementing the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). This process should also occur when accompanied by the support of the student’s specialists. The paraeducator is accountable only for the assigned support in the regular class, and any concerns regarding the student or their responsibilities should be discussed with the Special Education Teacher. Monitors behavior and follows protocol/procedures established to ensure a safe learning environment (in both the regular classroom and learning support classroom). Perform any additional duties assigned by the assigned Special Education Teacher and administration.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or associate’s degree. Demonstrates interest in children and education. Evidence of emotional maturity and stability is necessary for the specialized work involved.

Hourly rate as per the agreement between the Crestwood School District Board of Directors and the support staff
