Teacher Assistant (Full-Time Position)

Memphis Oral School for the Deaf (MOSD), a nonprofit dedicated to empowering deaf and hard-of-hearing children to develop listening and spoken language skills, is seeking a full-time Teacher Assistant. Reporting to the Director of Educational Services, this position supports classroom teachers in providing high-quality early education intervention through a comprehensive auditory-verbal program. Responsibilities include assisting with classroom management, planning activities, preparing materials, and supervising students throughout the day. Ideal candidates have a High School Diploma or CDA and at least one year of experience working with children. Strong organizational skills, a positive energy, and an encouraging attitude are essential. Work hours are Monday through Friday, with a required before/aftercare rotation. EDUCATION and

EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma, Child Development Associate (CDA), or Bachelor’s and must have at least one year working with children.

Primary Functions:
  • Assist the classroom teachers in performing intake evaluations using the Brigance Inventory of Early Skills on each student to assess the student’s functional level.
  • Assist the classroom teachers in planning daily activities of high interest and are developmentally appropriate to the child’s age and language level.
  • Assist classroom teachers in making educational materials and preparing art supplies.
  • Complete daily notes to go home to parents, apprising them of toileting, eating, and sleeping patterns during the day.
  • Prepare notes, artwork, etc., to go home in the children’s folder.
  • Help to prepare and supervise children’s lunches and naptimes.
  • Perform daily listening checks with each student using the Ling sounds and check hearing devices.
  • Attend weekly MOSD Staff meetings.
  • Substitute for classroom teachers in case of absence (differential pay allotted when substitution occurs).
  • Assist in before and after care as needed and rotate on a flexible schedule with other assistants.
  • Be available to assist children in the bathroom and change children’s diapers if needed.
  • Provide recess supervision for your class each day.
  • Use loving discipline with children.
  • Perform various duties essential to the smooth operation of MOSD, as requested, including keeping common areas tidy and clean.
  • Participate in staff functions such as SpeakEasy Gala and other functions.
  • Help to make children, parents, guests, and co-workers feel welcome and appreciated.
Other Requirements:
  • Demonstrate a natural ability to read a situation/ability level to meet student needs preemptively.
  • Demonstrate situational awareness: Recognize when a child may need to be redirected on a task. Help create a good listening environment by displaying good listening skills. Allowing ample time for children to answer expressively and appropriate turn-taking with the lead teacher.
  • Redirect parents to discuss a child’s daily progress with classroom teachers.
  • Engage with students with energy and enthusiasm.
  • Assess a child’s language level and converse appropriately with each child.
  • Display a positive attitude.
  • Make children feel good about themselves.
  • Play and/or can find conversational tools in daily or creative activities.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Utilize organizational skills.
  • Display daily energy to optimize each student’s learning ability in the classroom.
  • Be aware of children’s safety constantly.
  • Display patience with students to allow space for children to respond expressively.
  • Maintain flexibility.
  • Communicate any concerns, questions, and suggestions to the classroom teacher.
  • Work collaboratively with the teachers, assistant teachers, and other staff members.
  • Follow organizational norms.
  • Accept other duties as assigned.
Work Hours:

Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday 8:00 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Required Rotation with other Assistants for

Before/After Childcare:

Before Care 7:30 a.m.-8:15 a.m. After Care 3:45 p.m.-5:00 p.m.
