Profile of a Natick Educator

Program Summary:

PACE is an intervention at Natick High School helping teens and their families with the process of reentry and reintegration into the school community following extended absences due to medical or mental health crisis. PACE facilitates re-entry by providing academic and emotional skill building, home/school collaboration and case management. Students participate in PACE for a temporary period of time (4-12 weeks) while they are transitioning back to full participation in their school schedule of classes. PACE is led by a full time Adjustment Counselor/School Social Worker who works closely with students, families, and other personnel in the school.

JOB GOAL

The academic tutor is responsible for supervision and management of student academic progress, and assists in supporting students’ acute mental health and social/emotional needs.

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree Specialized Knowledge:

Understanding of child/pre/adolescent development
Understanding of and commitment to the principles and practices of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice as they relate to student engagement and opportunity

Preferred Experience:

Experience working with children/pre/adolescents Experience working in a diverse public school preferred
Experience working with students who are English language learners preferred
Experience with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Classroom, etc.) and PowerSchool preferred, but will train the right candidate

Skills:

Demonstrated aptitude for work to be performed
Bilingual skills, especially in Spanish and Portuguese, are highly desirable
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills
Strong organizational and time management skills
Candidates should have a passion for working with students, families, and colleagues
Candidates must be flexible and collaborative

Responsibilities:

Implements the academic component of the overall PACE case management/re-entry support plan for each student
Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students, including modifying existing curriculum in collaboration with students’ teachers allowing PACE students to rapidly achieve grades/credit.
Assists students with their academic readiness skills (organization, planning, prioritizing, etc) and provides support to stay focused on completing academic tasks
Develops and maintains assignment/assessment work trackers and academic data management for students
In partnership with PACE Coordinator, engage in two-way communication with families and school staff that keeps them apprised of student progress, challenges, and recommendations to further student learning and well-being
Collaborate with school personnel (teachers, guidance counselors, etc.) regarding the student’s progress in completing course work, recommending modifications, accommodations and other supports
Provide additional support to the PACE Coordinator as needed, such as coaching students to learn and use coping strategies and gather data on student engagement in PACE
Supervise the PACE classroom regularly, take attendance, assist with the students’ daily needs, and create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students The demonstration of sensitivity to the social-emotional and mental health needs of students with a high degree of confidentiality required; also maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
The ability to receive constructive feedback in a professional manner
