Tutor-ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages)

Position Description Position:

Tutor, Part-time Reports to: Director of Student Programming

Terms of Employment:

Up to 19.5 hours a week

Nature of Work The employee collaborates with teachers to effectively implement instructional strategies and classroom management and assessment techniques to ensure student achievement. Collaborates at the school level with the ESOL teacher to support students and improve student achievement.
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Three years of successful classroom teaching experience preferred
    Certification and Licensure Requirements (if applicable): Licensed as a teacher in North Carolina (preferred)
    Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
  • Support and work with ESOL teacher to assist with instruction of EL identified students
  • Assist English Language Identified children, aged kindergarten through high school in development of reading, writing, speaking and listening as well as academic vocabulary
  • Engage in academic activities with select students in one-on-one or small group.
  • Utilize assessment information before, during, and after instruction to guide instructional design.
  • Assist in analyzing data relative to the impact on activities and student achievement.
  • Maintain confidentiality of data and information. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Employee must be self-motivated, self-directed, collaborative, flexible, and highly organized.
  • Knowledge of educational curriculum, state standards, instructional methodology, and technology.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, administrators, and classified personnel.
  • Ability to work with a variety of staff, programs, and activities.
  • Possess a general working knowledge of Title III/ESL regulations, goals, and objectives, particularly school-wide programs.
  • Understand the growth and development of students in assigned school. Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate required office equipment and inspect work for accuracy, thoroughness, and adherence to work standards and instructions. Special Requirements NA
