Culinary Fundamentals, our award-winning culinary training program, provides access to high-quality jobs for those starting their careers in the food industry. Our upskilling programs enable incumbent workers to gain further skills, leading to higher wages and career advancement. We work diligently alongside our network of over 200 food employer partners and more than 250 nonprofit and government partners to ensure our graduates are set up for success both at home and in their careers. New New Yorkers is one of our Culinary Fundamentals programs that provides hands-on instruction on basic culinary and baking techniques, food safety, and other kitchen fundamentals, specially tailored to the needs of newly arrived, Spanish-speaking New Yorkers authorized to work. Bilingual instructors and support staff will provide instruction in English and Spanish.
OPPORTUNITY
Hot Bread Kitchen’s rapid growth plan through 2024 includes the expansion of our services to support the recently arrived migrant population in New York City. The Lead Culinary Instructor of our Community Outposts provides programmatic and administrative support to ensure the growth and success of Hot Bread Kitchen’s Culinary Workforce Program. This position serves as the primary instructor during culinary training, and is responsible for executing the training according to the HBK curriculum and standards. As part of this work, the Lead Culinary Instructor will assess members’ performance and meet with participants to deliver constructive feedback. The Lead Culinary Instructor is also responsible for managing the kitchen and culinary staff during training. This critical role requires the coordination of various workforce activities, which range from interviewing and assessing potential program participants to training and job placement support. This involves conducting one-on-one consultations with members, assisting with outreach, sourcing and developing programmatic materials, and preparing members for careers in their respective industries. The Lead Culinary Instructor will lead a minimum of four cohorts in our Community Outposts throughout the year. These outpost kitchens are located in various locations around New York City, including Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Each cohort may take place either during daytime or evening hours. The ideal candidate for this role is someone who has a background in culinary arts education and also has strong project management skills. The Instructor directs the kitchen staff during training hours, including a Kitchen Assistant, and porter/dishwasher. The pace of this multifaceted role is fast-moving and requires the ability to effectively engage with diverse groups of program stakeholders. The ideal candidate for this role is someone who is proactive, efficient, and thorough. Hot Bread Kitchen Curriculum includes Knife Skills, Basic Culinary Techniques, Fundamental Baking and Pastry Techniques, Food Safety & Sanitation Principles, Kitchen Math and Recipe Reading.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Instruction:
Develop mastery of Hot Bread Kitchen Culinary Fundamentals curriculum in order to lead culinary workforce program instruction in both English and Spanish. Lead or co-lead professional readiness lessons during culinary cohorts. Provide hands-on, in-person kitchen management during the Culinary Program, including in-class instruction, inventory and ordering of supplies, and daily assessment of trainees. Work 1:1 with members to provide educational and technical support with program content and personalized feedback. Provide educational and administrative support during in-person classes. Assess performance through observation and interaction; provide regular feedback and guidance to program members. Create and administer surveys/assessment tools, collect and analyze responses. Collaborate with HBK staff members to assist in the employer matching process. Communicate with Hot Bread Kitchen Program staff about member issues/concerns as well as member successes. Work across teams to facilitate site visits. Work closely with Kitchen Assistant and Porter to keep kitchen organized and up to DOH standards.
Program Management, Staff Management and Administrative Responsibilities:
Assist in leading the interview and assessment process for the Culinary Training Program. Manage and oversee the Kitchen Assistant during onsite programming and during non-program times. Oversee the on-site porter service during program hours. Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with training host sites and their staff, ensure space is left as it was found. Meet regularly with Member Engagement and Job Placement teams to ensure member success. Meet regularly with contracted instructors at HBK of ESOL programs to monitor member performance and inform lessons. Meet regularly with Job Placement Team in employer matching process. Meet regularly with the Case Manager/Member Engagement Team about member issues or concerns and member success. Track member attendance, performance, and other relevant metrics; maintain accurate records using Google Suite. Support culinary program instructional needs as needed, including locations for potential program expansion and support with Outpost and Chelsea Market programs. Edit and update the curriculum, as needed. Oversee various administrative tasks to ensure program success. Assist with program planning and expansion, as needed.
Special Events:
Serve as culinary representative at Brand and Community Engagement events, as requested and per availability. Develop and execute recipes for events and tastings, as requested and per availability. Host cooking classes for partners on an as-requested basis and with regards to availability.
QUALIFICATIONS
Passion for Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission Spanish-speaking proficiency required and fluency preferred Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural and economic backgrounds A minimum of 3-5 years experience in a professional restaurant environment at a Chef level Teaching/training experience Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and counsel people Experience with a variety of pedagogical approaches that will help to inform and strengthen delivery of the Culinary Fundamentals curriculum Extremely organized and attentive to detail Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and interpersonal skills General computer proficiency in Google platforms, and productivity software

LOCATION AND HOURS
This position requires regular in-person attendance at our Culinary Outpost locations throughout New York City as well as our facility in Chelsea Market. This work will primarily take place during afternoon and evening hours (1:00pm-9:00pm) when programs are in session. Daytime flexibility is also required for administrative meetings and when programs are not in session.
COMPENSATION
This is a full-time position. The salary range is $72,000 to $75,000 and is commensurate with experience.
