100% Overview An employee in this classification is responsible for professional correctional teaching work of average difficulty and performs related work as required. This is the entry level class in the DCS Correctional Teacher sub-series. This classification differs from that of DCS Correctional Teacher Supervisor in that an incumbent of the latter participates in classroom instruction and supervises the DCS Correctional Teachers and DCS Vocational Instructors at the youth development centers. This classification also differs from the DCS Vocational Instructor in that an incumbent of this class focuses more on general education classes rather than vocational instruction. Responsibilities Create lesson plans that align state requirements and standards. Activities and materials are created using prior student knowledge. Create assignments that are aligned with state content standards, require written task, measure performance in more than one way and include performance check throughout the year that will be monitored monthly through review with supervisor. Present instructional content that establishes the purpose of the lesson, model performance expectations and uses concise and engaging communication as evidenced by monthly supervisor observation. Motivate students by organizing content to make it personally meaningful and develop a learning experience where curiosity and exploration are valued. Display accurate content knowledge of the subjects taught, implement subject specific instructional strategies and highlight key concepts and ideas to connect powerful ideas. Use appropriate verbal de-escalation skills while following through with the facility behavior modification program (therapeutic rewards and consequences) to maintain safety in the classroom. Participate in treatment team meetings, staffings and Child and Family Team meetings to ensure continuity of care for the youth and provide meaningful and direct feedback. Set clear academic and behavioral expectations and model appropriate behaviors in the classroom.
