Position Summary This position is responsible for implementation and execution of service management methodology of connected medical devices, focusing on medical equipment and systems integration standards and practices, and medical device risk management. This includes remediation of identified risk or security flaws and collaboration with medical device and medical system vendors to assure optimal risk management steps are enforced and implemented. This role also collaborates with ECU Health Information Technology, Networking, Clinical Informatics and Cyber Security teams to assure optimal technical architecture, interoperability services and cyber-security methodologies are implemented in the area of the assigned technologies and services. Is responsible for appropriate cross-training and specialized training to support these tasks. Provides technical assistance to biomedical engineering and medical staff and other healthcare professionals. As appropriate, provides contracted Biomedical Services to affiliated hospitals and organizations and oversees special projects in new and existing construction as pertaining to assigned responsibilities of the role. Responsibilities Supports Medical Equipment Integration processes Following best practices and standards in service management methodology, serve and operate as a subject matter expert in medical device integration initiatives and projects. Helps plan and execute organizational technology integration projects designed to improve clinical, operational, administrative, and long-term growth initiatives across the system.
Collaborates with management to help identify and investigate organizational capabilities and needs in line with established and emerging standards in medical device integration and interoperability.
Through close collaboration with ECU Health Information Technology, Clinical Informatics and Cyber Security teams, assures and engages on implementation of optimal technical architecture, cyber-security defense and technology maintenance programs supporting connected medical devices.
Supports the implementation and maintenance of connected medical equipment service management methodology including testing, release management, enterprise architecture, risk management and environment functions across the enterprise. Drives risk management practices Is responsible for the execution of the risk management processes and standards, including but not limited to OS and firmware updates, vulnerability management, connectivity, and interoperability requirements.
Establish and maintain comprehensive action plans to address technical, process and administrative gaps to enable successful execution of medical device integration, risk management and technology advancement.
Identify and implement improvements in medical device risk management following best practice risk management processes and standards, including but not limited to OS and firmware updates, vulnerability management, connectivity, and interoperability requirements. Collaborates with Cybersecurity, Networking and other Information Systems teams to identify necessary strategic improvements to minimize risk to the organization in the area of responsibility.
Maintain vendor relationships to assure proper planning and execution of risk management activities, and maintain information and record of upcoming critical events, changes, and deadlines. Notify appropriate department and service owners of the existing risks, remediation opportunities and assist identifying cost and effort. Makes recommendations to Chief Technology Officer regarding improvements to medical device risk management.
Provides contracted and planned Biomedical Services to affiliated hospitals as needed and is responsible for the quality and efficiency of the services provided. Maintains proper documentation and special projects: Maintains records, plans, roadmaps and other documentation supporting regular operations, risk management, lifecycle and maintenance of connected and other associated medical devices.
Maintains proper documentation in compliance with JCAHO and other regulatory agencies: Develops, maintains and is responsible for all aspects of documentation as to comply with JCAHO and other regulatory agencies. This includes performance, assurance, and safety inspections, calibrations and periodic maintenance, system upgrades and risk management activities. All records must be kept up-to-date, orderly and completed in full. Prepares and makes available metrics, dashboards and reports that clearly identify the state of assigned systems, services, and systems, including identifying current risk, technical debt and technology gaps. Engages in special projects in new and existing construction: Works with Facilities + Properties to help develop drawings, install systems, work with contractors as it relates to nurse call systems, paging systems, television antenna systems, intercom systems, and other assigned systems and services. Maintains code and records for all equipment: Maintains Code (National & State) requirements for all Biomedical equipment and conformance of codes regarding all new equipment prior to first use. Oversees performance, assurance and safety inspections for all new equipment and all in-house equipment in a scheduled manner. Reviews and stays up to date on regulations of state, federal and JCAHO.
Maintains records to ensure compliance of same. Is available for explanation and assistance with any inspection by any state, federal or Joint Commission team. Ensures that any complaint by any inspection team is handled as priority. Assists in evaluation of new equipment for purchase or in the writing of bid specifications. Works closely with each department leadership to ensure any ordered equipment will meet or exceed the needs of the end user. As appropriate, serves on committees as needed. Minimum Requirements Education requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or biomedical engineering OR 4 years work related experience.
Registration or Certification:
Preferred:
Certification by the International Certification Commission for Clinical Engineering and Biomedical Technology. Related Work Experience and skills 3 years operational experience in Biomedical engineering operations or cyber-security operations supporting clinical engineering. 1 year experience in medical device risk management Competent understanding of Information Technology and Cybersecurity practices, including understanding of Operating Systems, vulnerability management operations and standards. Understanding of NIST and similar frameworks is preferred.
Healthcare medical equipment network integration management experience, including medical device integration standards such as
DICOM, HL7
Knowledge in IS technologies such as network infrastructure including servers, firewalls, routers, Wireless APs, desktop workstation architecture.
