Synthetic Molecule Process Development (SMPD) isresponsible for developing robust, cost-effective processes for newsmall-molecule pharmaceuticals, including methods to achieve andcontrol high standards of crystal form, particle size distribution,and product quality. The successful candidate will take charge ofcutting-edge process safety workflows and evaluations, ensuringthat the latest technologies are leveraged at every stage ofprocess research, development, and manufacturing. They will beresponsible for reducing process risks and enabling a safer,smarter, and faster development Additionally, the Engineer III willhelp build and maintain SMPD’s process safety database whilechampioning an in-silico first mindset to minimize experimentationand promote data-driven decisions. How you will contribute:
Support phaseappropriate process safety testing. Work with process chemists andengineers to perform a thorough evaluation of all known andpotential hazards for the safe scale-up of chemical processes forpreparing pharmaceutical intermediates and active pharmaceuticalingredients in Takeda’s research and manufacturing facilities.
Collect and integrate relevant process safety data (e.g.,calorimetry, pressure build-up, off-gassing), using for e.g. DSC,ARC, TSU, EasyMax, RC-1 and ARC into digital platforms for seamlessdata analysis and sharing, ensuring data complies with FAIRprinciples (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). Workwith external vendors to collect relevant process safety data.
Document and summarize safety results in an Electronic Lab Notebook(ELN) and generate comprehensive digital process safety reports,ensuring consistent and accessible data tracking and compliancedocumentation.
Partner with internal & external manufacturingorganizations to ensure the safe scale-up of Takeda’s processes.
Use software and build models to calculate critical processparameters, such as runaway reactions, self-acceleratingdecomposition temperature (SADT), and time to maximum rate underadiabatic conditions (TMRad), driving proactive safetyinterventions. Maintain SMPD’s kilo labs, ensuring that they aresafe, clean and functional. Manage the kilo lab inventory(including chemicals, reagents, equipment & consumables) and ensureadequate supplies are available. Coordinate with contractors,vendors, and internal stakeholders to oversee the installation,commissioning, and qualification of kilo lab equipment and systems.
Oversee internal manufacturing campaigns (e.g. reviews batchrecords, set-up equipment, support execution & cleaning). Supportlocal initiatives as directed by his/her supervisor and participatein global functional initiatives as appropriate.
MinimumRequirements/Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in ChemicalEngineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering or related fieldwith 2 years relevant industry experience; chemical orpharmaceutical industry preferred. Master’s degree in ChemicalEngineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering or related fieldwith 0 years relevant industry experience; chemical orpharmaceutical industry preferred. Previous experience working in alab setting preferred. Previous experience working in a pilot plantsetting a plus. Previous experience in process safety in thepharmaceutical, agrochemical, fine chemical or related industry aplus. Experience using relevant process safety equipment (e.g. DSC,RC1, Easymax HFCal, ARC, Tsu) a plus. Previous experience withsoftware packages for process safety prediction (e.g., AKTS, AspenPlus, gPROMS) a plus, focusing on the prediction of thermal,chemical, and kinetic properties. Understanding of FAIR dataprinciples (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) to driveefficient data management for safety modeling and analytics. Base Salary Range:
$86,500.00 – $135,960.00 The estimatedsalary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. Theactual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors,including the qualifications of the individual applicant for theposition, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills,level of education attained, certifications or other professionallicenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/orfrom which they will be performing the job.
The actual base salaryoffered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wagerequirements for the job location. U.S. based employees may beeligible for short-term and/or long-termincentives.
