PURPOSE
Sylvamo is seeking a dynamic and visionary Process Controls Manager to drive operational excellence, enhance reliability and lead a high-performing team of Process Controls Engineers. This role is pivotal in ensuring the availability and performance of our process automation systems while also shaping the future of process controls within our Eastover, South Carolina mill. As a leader, you will strive to seamlessly integrate daily operations with transformational initiatives, leveraging cutting-edge automation, analytics, and optimization strategies to position the mill for long-term success.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Team Leadership
Lead and mentor the Process Controls Engineering Team, applying modern manufacturing excellence tools to optimize control systems for improved reliability, operational efficiency, and safety
Build and maintain an agile, adaptable team capable of managing multiple complex projects from concept to execution
Ensure ongoing training and development for Process Controls Engineers, ensuring the team is equipped to adapt to evolving technologies and methodologies
Serve on mill task force and ad-hoc teams to lead and contribute to mill and company initiatives
System Availability and Performance
Own the reliability, availability and performance of advanced process controls (APCs), model predictive controls (MPCs), single input single output controls (SISO), distributed control systems (DCS), and quality control systems (QCS)
Serve as the mill’s subject matter expert (SME) in process controls, leading the management, maintenance, and evolution of mill-wide control systems
Partner with IT to integrate automation, analytics, and process control systems into a cohesive, data-driven operational framework
Process Controls Transformation
Work closely with corporate transformation teams to drive mill-wide optimization (MWO) efforts, ensuring coordinated, cutting-edge control strategies that enhance efficiency, yield, and product quality
Lead the implementation of transformative process controls, smart automation, and next-generation manufacturing technologies to future-proof mill operations
Champion impactful process control solutions, engaging employees at all levels to identify, scope, and implement efficiency-driven initiatives
Collaborate with corporate leadership to redefine organizational structures, upskill talent, and shape the future role of Process Controls Engineers in a digitally transformed environment
System Sustainability
Proactively drive system reliability and process efficiency, ensuring controls performance aligns with mill-wide production and sustainability goals
Enforce rigorous safety and project delivery best practices, ensuring project success in terms of safety, budget, schedule, reliability, and performance metrics
Maintain a strong commitment to operational safety, embedding safety considerations into all aspects of process control strategies and execution
Projects
Facilitate adherence to the Sylvamo Project Delivery Process to ensure selection and proper development of correct projects
Develop and execute strategic process efficiency improvements and cost-saving initiatives in collaboration with operations and maintenance teams
Oversee and drive both large and small capital projects, ensuring timely and cost-effective implementation while leveraging regional engineering support and external contractors
Collaborate across corporate, technology, and vendor networks to deliver best-in-class process control solutions

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
Required:

Eight years of manufacturing or engineering management experience
BS Degree in a related engineering discipline
Good communication skills, both verbal and written to constructively interact with mill teams, project teams, and management
Experience with QCS, DCS, PLC, Provox and/or Delta V and instrumentation
Green Belt certification in ME/Lean Manufacturing tools with experience applying to process controls
Demonstrated ability to get results through constructively influencing others and successfully interacting with a wide variety of people.
Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects and deadlines.
Experience using process improvement methodologies and/or change management processes

Preferred:

Ten years engineering experience in Pulp and Paper industry
Ten years of manufacturing or engineering management experience.
MS Degree in a related engineering discipline
Advanced or Black Belt ME/Lean Manufacturing certification with experience applying to process controls
Proficiency with SAP, Word, Excel, Microsoft Project
Proficient with project management requirements for specifications, estimating, purchasing requirements, budget control and forecasting spending
Starting salary depending on qualifications and relevant and experience with opportunity to progress.
