We are currently seeking a Technical Designer

II / III

to join the Civic & Justice Practice. The Technical Designer is responsible for developing, organizing, and executing the development of construction documents utilizing creativity, foresight, and judgment to meet project requirements and objectives through project completion. They will participate as a member of the project team in all aspects of preparing complete and comprehensive architectural construction drawings and specifications and coordinate the documents with project consultants and contractors.
Experience in Justice and Civic building typologies is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate has experience working on projects such as: Correction facilities, Jails, Prisons, Detention Centers, Courthouses, etc.

Other preferred experience includes:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

Participate in the design phase activities by providing expertise in detail development
Participate in all construction phase activities
Conduct existing conditions surveys and prepare architectural base plans, sections, elevations and details as appropriate to document relevant conditions
Review applicable building and accessibility codes and develop a list of criteria to be reflected in the design documents
Assist the design team by researching products and systems that accomplish the design intent
Prepare construction documents including, but not limited to: demolition plans; partition plans; reflected ceiling plans; telephone/electric/data plans; finish plans; large scale details plans; sections and elevations; detail drawings for millwork and cabinetry; schedules for doors, frames, hardware, architectural finishes and partition types; and construction specifications for all material, finish and product selections
Prepare bidding documents, general conditions and supplemental conditions that are part of the contract documents
Review and process all shop drawing/sample submissions and consult with the Studio Manager, Project Manager, and Project Designer, as appropriate, to ensure that the design intent is being maintained
Participate in the punch list process
Lead, facilitate, and manage the overall design process for moderately complex projects independently and support larger complex projects under supervision
Contribute to developing fee proposals
Develop innovative design concepts which are practical, aesthetic, safe and conducive to intended purposes and function which is reflective of client goals and within project budget
Selection and specification of materials, products, and architectural systems
Assists Project Manager in sub-contracting or the coordination of sub-consultant’s work
Lead the Construction Administration phase responding to RFI’s, CO’s, reviewing shop drawings and involved in the field site reviews
Ensure project documentation is compliant with NELSON standard for all projects and processes
Develops solutions to technical and design problems following established standards
Prepares 2D and 3D presentation/design drawings
Provide research and compile data during project phases
Prepare and modify interior architectural documents, elevations, sections, details, etc.
Supports the team in collecting information for client assessment; may attend interviews, provide documentation support
Conduct design charrettes and lead project team meetings
Complete timesheet and expense reports accurately and on-time
Assist with the schematic phases as directed (sketching, input of sketches, modification of schematic test fit plans, etc.).

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of expectations related to high-quality service to clients
Advanced knowledge of design, trends, construction methodology, materials application and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness; consistently share such knowledge with teammates
Advanced knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
Advanced knowledge of furniture, fixture and equipment (FF&E), architectural/interior finishes, lighting, art signage, color and materials to carryout design intent
Advanced knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines
Advanced understanding of building regulations, life safety codes and ADA requirements
Advanced understanding of project budgets and schedules
Advanced knowledge of design techniques, tools, and processes involved in production of Construction Documents
Advanced knowledge of the construction process as it relates to the drawings being produced
Ability to organize and prioritize tasks as needed to complete within the identified time frame

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Architectural Drafting, or related field
Highly proficient in both Revit and AutoCAD
Must be deadline-oriented
Strong attention to detail
Architectural experience in: Community, Civic, Justice, and Education is strongly preferred, with experience in the production of challenging technical drawings.
Experience in Justice and Civic building typologies is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate has experience working on projects such as: Correction facilities, Jails, Prisons, Detention Centers, Courthouses, etc.

Other preferred experience includes:

municipalities, police and fire stations, city and county buildings, and other public works/public safety buildings.
Familiarity with Photoshop and/or InDesign preferred
National salary range: $60,000 – $100,000 (5+ years experience). Additional compensation includes bonuses and benefits (compensation factors are based upon years of relevant experience, qualifications/licensure, education, and location.) Bonuses can include but are not limited to: Long Term Incentive Plan, Short Term Incentive Plan, Profit Sharing
