This role leads design efforts using advanced 2D/3D CAD software, ensures compliance with major codes and standards (IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE), and collaborates closely with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams. The Designer IV supports field and construction activities, reviews vendor/shop drawings, and drives continuous improvement in design processes. The position requires significant technical experience, strong leadership, and a commitment to quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Essential Functions:

Lead and execute civil/structural design activities for small to large-scale EPC projects, working autonomously or as a discipline lead with minimal supervision. Develop and prepare detailed 2D and 3D models, drawings, and design packages using advanced CAD software (AutoCAD Civil 3D, CADWorx, Navisworks, Revit). Ensure all designs comply with local, state, and federal codes and standards (IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE, etc.) and client specifications. Coordinate civil/structural designs with other disciplines (mechanical, piping, electrical, process) to ensure seamless integration and constructability. Review and check design documents, shop drawings, and vendor submittals for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to standards. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and drafters. Conduct field investigations, site walks, and construction support activities, including responding to RFIs and resolving design-related issues. Participate in project planning, estimating, and scheduling; provide input on scope, man-hour estimates, and deliverable timelines. Prepare and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including calculations, specifications, and reports. Identify and implement process improvements and innovative design solutions to enhance project delivery and efficiency. Ensure all work activities comply with safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Management/Supervisory Responsibility:

May supervise or provide technical oversight to junior staff or contractors on a project-specific basis.

Work Environment:

Normal business office environment with moderate noise. The position typically performs tasks within assigned office facility but may require site visits to customer facilities. Occasionally, may visit or be temporarily assigned to work in an operating plant or at a construction site. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals, and airborne particles. For site visits, safety glasses and other safety equipment are required depending on task. Orion will provide all personnel with standard safety equipment.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job: Occasionally, will conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site. This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must be able to bend, stoop and climb on a ladder or up and down stairs. Must be able to drive a company vehicle to and from job sites or office locations. Site visits to client facilities may be required with little or no notice. Travel may be required between Orion office locations. P osition

Working Hours and Schedule:

Employee work schedules are determined by the needs of the department and/or production. Core working hours are established to ensure that all necessary functions are covered efficiently. While these core hours are fixed, there may be some flexibility in start and end times to accommodate individual needs, provided that departmental requirements are met.

Skills & Qualifications:

Familiarity with permitting, regulatory compliance, and construction support. Experience reviewing and checking work of others and providing mentorship. Advanced knowledge and proficiency in Computer Aided Drafting / Design Certification (CADD) and/or relevant work experience; AutoCAD or other CAD software. Advanced proficiency in 2D/3D CAD platforms (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, CADWorx, Navisworks, Revit). In-depth knowledge of civil/structural engineering principles, codes, and standards (IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE, etc.). Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Strong leadership and project management skills, with the ability to lead teams and manage project timelines effectively. Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment within established guidelines and create detailed schematics. Working knowledge of industry recognized and generally accepted standards, codes, and practices related to instrumentation and electrical design. Teamwork, flexibility, integrity, and a high degree of professionalism are required. Proficiency in MS Microsoft (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.). Strong analytical skills to identify and resolve complex design and engineering challenges, including root cause analysis and innovative thinking. Extensive experience with industrial control systems and field instrumentation. Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex projects. Proficiency in creating one-line diagrams, loop sheets, and panel layouts for industrial applications. Must have valid driver’s license and suitable driving record that is able to meet company driver requirements and to obtain a TWIC card if required. Ability to read and understand policies, procedures, and processes. Commitment to high quality.

Internal Candidates:

Must be prompt, dependable, and have a good attendance and performance record. Must be able to pass an approved background check. Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test. Must participate in random drug tests.

Education Requirements:

BS degree in civil, structural, or architectural engineering, or related field preferred. Associate’s degree or Technical Degree combined with professional training or equivalent work experience is acceptable. CADD Certification.

Experience Requirements:

Minimum 8+ years in Civil/Structural Engineering Design or related functional area (or equivalent working knowledge/experience). Experience with industrial site development, drainage, earthworks, roadways, foundations, structural steel, and concrete design preferred.
