About the

Role:

The Civil Engineer (Project Design) performs both technical and professional engineering work and manages consulting engineers throughout the design, investigation, and construction of public works projects.

Core responsibilities include:

Designing and preparing construction plans and specifications for city infrastructure projects (roadways, sidewalks, bridges, storm drains, and utilities)
Managing external consultants on engineering designs and ensuring compliance with project timelines, standards, and codes
Coordinating project phases including surveying, design, utility impact analysis, and right-of-way and easement needs
Utilizing AutoCAD and other engineering software (including Carlson Software) to support design work
Preparing cost estimates, reviewing permits, interpreting engineering plans, and facilitating public and interdepartmental communication
Attending project meetings, resolving on-site construction issues, and monitoring project progress as the design project manager.

Qualifications

What You Bring:
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree with 1-3 years of experience in roadway design and project management
“OR” an Associate’s Degree with 5-7 years of experience in roadway design and project management
Valid Driver’s License
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Experience using AutoCAD

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Civil Engineering or a related field
North Carolina Professional Engineer (PE) License
Engineering Intern (EI) Certification
Experience working with a municipality or public agency
Experience using Carlson Software
