POSITION SUMMARY
The Design Division Manager is an engineering and operations manager for an established fast-growing design division that specializes in low to mid-rise residential, commercial, and industrial projects. The manager oversees the work product of a team of design engineers, drafters, and project managers, provides proposals for new work, and assists business development in fostering new and/ or existing client relationships.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for profitable operation and growth of the design division and the achievement of long-term departmental goals as defined by the Firm CEO. Oversees preparation of structural drawings by design engineers and drafters by working closely with the design team to coordinate structural drawing layouts and connection details for low to mid-rise residential, commercial, and industrial projects. Ensures the quality and accuracy of structural construction documents produced by the design team and finalizes and stamps structural drawings as needed. Provides the administrative team with timely and accurate quotes for pricing and anticipated start and completion dates for projects. Builds and maintains the design team through hiring, training, incentivizing, and coaching team members. Establishes standard work processes, automate processes, and codifies best practices for the performance and delivery of engineering plans and activities. Coordinates marketing of the department’s services with the Firm’s Marketing Specialist, fosters, and maintains client relationships, and ensures exceptional customer service is provided by the Design Division. Other duties as designed by supervisor or executive staff.
Education & Skills Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering (with a focus in structures) and 10+ years of related experience and/or training; or a Master’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (M.S. or M.C.E.) and 7+ years of related experience and/or training. Professional Engineer (PE) license required. Structural Engineer (passed 16-hour NCEES exam) highly encouraged. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret building Codes, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to draft reports and other business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; drafting software (AutoCAD or Revit); structural calculation software (Enercalc and RetainPro or similar); and structural modeling software (RISA 2D/3D, RAM Elements, or similar).
SUPERVISORY DUTIES
Directly supervises staff in the Design Division. Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to talk or listen. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Performance of site visits and other field work often requires crawling through confined spaces beneath structures and/or traversing and climbing through unfinished attics.
Work Environment:
Eligible for hybrid onsite. 100% remote in Raleigh until May 2025 pending new office renovation. This position will require occasional travel between the Raleigh and Wilmington offices to support the Design team. The candidate MUST be local to Raleigh or Wilmington. If out of state, you will be required to relocate to the area.
