POSITION PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Design Manager, the Designer is responsible for utilizing CAD systems to generate solid models, 3D assemblies, and 2D drawings and layouts to meet customer specifications. Also, to provide support to Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Electrical. The Designer works closely with the Electrical Designers to produce designs that meet design standards, are manufacturable, and are economically feasible. The Designer is also responsible for the design and development of fabricated and machined components and multiple component assemblies. Converts CAD models and assemblies into detail drawings that include all dimensions and notes necessary for manufacture. Maintains all electronic CAD data and 2D drawings and routinely performs checks to ensure that all data is compliant with company practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Uses computer aided design/drafting software (SolidWorks) to develop designs. Creates and makes production drawing revisions (component part, layout, and assembly drawings) that include detailed multi-views with all necessary dimensions. Generates 3D & 2D component parts and assemblies of proposed designs in appropriate CAD system, checks dimension of parts, material to be used, relation of one part to another, and relation of various parts to whole structure or project. Utilizes knowledge of various manufacturing principles, engineering practices, mathematics, materials, and physical sciences to complete detailed designs and drawings. Creates finished designs from sketches. Creates and maintains drafting standards utilizing appropriate company guidelines. Maintains the organized file system for all Production Drawings. Prepares and enters data into an MRP system the Bills of Materials, Production Versions, Engineering Change Notices, and requests Purchase Orders. Checks documentation for compliance with ISO 9001 and AAR regulations. Communicates with Purchasing, QA, Engineering, and Manufacturing regarding new and revised designs or drawings and submits designs to suppliers for a quote. Receives feedback from Production and updates designs and drawings appropriately through the Engineering Change system. Keep a clean and orderly work space.
COMPETENCY OR POSITION REQUIREMENTS
(knowledge, skills and abilities) Good technical writing and communication skills preferred. A high skill level in SolidWorks CAD system important. Must be able to convert any particular real world widget into a CAD model. Skilled in PC usage and associated software including Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, etc.). Ability to go up and down Frames / Ladders and able to be outside on the shop floor for long durations. Knowledge of Hand Tools, Metal Fabrication, Welding, and General Mechanical Systems preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
(required levels) Associates of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Computer Aided Design Drafting and/or applicable experience. 2-3 years related experience
