Job Description

As a structural analyst you will support the MSFC Space Systems Department in technical activities for the development of space systems structure, performing structural analysis for both flight and non-flight hardware. Your work will support existing programs at NASAs Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).You will be expected to contribute to the development, test, and certification of space systems hardware for a wide variety of NASAs ongoing and future projects.

Provide technical support in the structural evaluation of Environmental Control Life Support Systems equipment.

Develop formal stress analysis packages for structural systems using strength of materials and finite element-based methods.

Work within a team of fellow analysts while interfacing with program stakeholders and leaders.

Provide inputs to preliminary designs.

Develop and deliver reports and presentations to management.

Collaborate with outside vendors and personnel from other NASA centers in the development of integrated flight hardware.

Job Requirements:

A BS degree (MS or PhD preferred) in Mechanical, Civil, or Aerospace Engineering; or related field with an emphasis in structural analysis is required. A degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typically, educational requirement is a BS with 0-5 years of experience.

Required:

Experience conducting assessments and verification of spaceflight equipmentKnowledge of one or more commercial Finite Element and CAD applications. Experience working with finite element software: Femap, Simcenter, NASTRAN, Abaqus, Ansys Workbench.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired:

3+ years of experience in the application of finite element methods, empirical closed-form structural analysis techniques, and the assessment of failure mechanisms is required.

Knowledge of NASA and MSFC standards and specifications as well as experience with the design and analysis of joints containing mechanical fasteners, adhesives, welds, and composite/metallic interfaces.

Knowledge of NASGRO and experience conducting fracture classification and evaluation of spaceflight hardware components.

Knowledge of NASFLA and experience conducting fatigue evaluation of spaceflight hardware components.

Knowledge and experience utilizing analytical optimization software to refine designs to streamline required structural mass.
