Resident Engineer Job Description The Resident Engineer will oversee two NYC Parks Department projects focused on the reconstruction of city sidewalks and tree health. This role requires managing both small and large contractors across various sites throughout the city. Effective communication with clients and contractors, along with excellent written and verbal skills, are essential. The Resident Engineer will be responsible for reviewing contract line items and overseeing tasks such as saw cutting, excavation, planting, concrete restoration, and ensuring the completion of punch list items. Responsibilities Visit multiple sites daily, sometimes up to ten, based on workflow. Manage contractors on streets and occasionally in parks. Communicate effectively with clients. Review contract line items and provide oversight for services including saw cutting, excavation, planting, concrete restoration, and back checks. Receive site locations via email from the Project Manager. Meet with the Superintendent at the job site by 7 AM. Observe contractors on site and ensure safety protocols are followed. Coordinate with the Project Manager to ensure adequate staffing. Work collaboratively with Parks Department and contractors. Utilize specification books and understand their contents. Ensure safety on site, including ensuring contractors wear PPE. Record and track measurements for pay items, such as tree planting and excavation. Essential Skills Associates degree in forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or related plant science field; or construction project management and/or civil engineering with 2 years of related work experience. Bachelor’s degree with 1 year of experience. Master’s degree with 6 months of experience. 3+ years of experience in relevant fields. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Access to a vehicle for transportation to work sites. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Experience in performing daily field reporting and construction oversight tasks. Additional Skills & Qualifications Knowledge of plant species. Experience working for a landscaper for several years or summers. Work Environment The role involves working throughout the five boroughs, primarily focused on Parks Department projects. The work schedule is from 7 AM to 3 PM, and it requires operating in various outdoor environments. The Resident Engineer will not be required to climb, work on active roadways, or prune trees, as all activities will be conducted at land level.
