Job SummaryThe Voice Electronic Technician installs, tests, repairs, fire stop, and maintains unified power systems, converters (DC to AC or vice versa), battery plant, amplifiers, mixers, cable rack fabrication, spacing and installation, radio antenna and grounding, build and install cable harnesses. Applications may include analog, digital, and/or video circuits and logic systems. The Electronic Technician will normally be assigned in areas such as development, engineering, test equipment, system checkout, fabrication, and the like. The chosen candidate will work on all voice systems at Kennedy Space Center including OIS-M, OIS-Q2, PAWS, and Radios.
- This is a represented staff position with the IBEW Union.
- Duties/Responsibilities
- Performs technical functions supporting engineering activities
- Constructs, troubleshoots, calibrates, adjusts, tests, and maintains equipment, components, devices, or systems, works from documentation, written or verbal instructions, schematics, rough sketches, diagrams, layouts, and plans often requiring interpretation and application of comprehensive knowledge and practical understanding of electronic theory and principles
- Conducts testing in a development mode and determines methods or actions to correct malfunctions or design problems
- Recommends modifications to engineering designs as necessary
- May assist in the design, construction, test, and checkout of test equipment
- Using steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, wood and plywood stock fabricate custom support equipment for use installing voice and data systems
- Install, remove, control and replace serial digital closed circuit surveillance television and webcams systems in support of spacecraft, payload and security operations
- Install setup and operate video equipment and portable sound reinforcement
- Perform software upgrades on sustaining systems
- Install and maintain hand held, fixed and mobile radio frequency (RF) radios.## Required Skills, Qualifications, Technical Experience, Certifications, etc
- This position is “journey-level,” meaning workers can start and finish a wide range of cable and wire activities independently
- Employees working at this level typically require an understanding of electrical theory, exercising independent judgment in performing circuit diagnostics analysis
- Workers must be able to read and have a comprehensive understanding of electronic schematics
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Employer conducts a NASA background investigation
- Employer conducts an initial and random drug testing
- Must have and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Physical Requirements
- Requires working indoors and outdoors
- Outdoor conditions may be in cold and hot temperatures, high humidity, and windy conditions
- Certain job assignments require special precautions and/or protective gear or clothing due to potential risk for such sources as moving machinery, chemicals, and electrical hazards, working from special rigging, working from heights, climbing ladders and other work platforms and working in confined and small spaces restricting physical movement
- Often requires lifting up to 35
- 50 pounds and working on uneven surfaces, and standing for long periods
- Requires repetitive movement, bending, stooping, twisting and working in awkward positions.
- Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. Lighting conditions may be inadequate in some work locations
- Ability to recognize or interpret differences in wire and cable colors
- Ability to receive and transmit auditory information using telecommunication or electronic devices
