Description of Work This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This position provides technical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment with emphasis on traffic control equipment & related devices for all fourteen counties of Division 1. The duties to be performed include installing traffic signal equipment, wiring detectors, installing and wiring controllers, tracing out electrical wiring diagrams to locate trouble, dismantling and reassembling components, and replacing worn or faulty parts. Work will be performed without constant supervision and will be evaluated by the supervisor for efficient use of time and proper operation of Traffic Control Systems repaired and maintained. Skills of this position include general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trade, ability to diagnose the source of equipment failures, and the ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. The employee within this position will be subject to overtime work when necessary and the position is subject to emergency callback. The Electronics Technician is expected to maintain proper / accurate records of all signal work accomplished, time worked, and all materials used via computer. The successful applicant will be exposed to weather conditions of hot and cold, high volume of moving traffic. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components
Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams
Knowledge of the National Electric Code
Experience planning, scheduling, and carrying out work assignments effectively with minimal supervision
Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions
Additional Expectations:
Possess the ability to lift, up to 85 lbs. or more at shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 50 feet in height. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. Applicant must possess the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signs and other traffic control devices, as well as possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and hot outside conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic, and heavy construction. May be required to work during non-traditional work hours including weekends, holidays, nights, and times of emergency. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is needed. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Associate’s degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, the employee may be required to obtain appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
