This Electronics Technician I position within the Division 9 Traffic Services Unit will be responsible for constructing and assisting with signal installations, diagnosing malfunctions in traffic signal equipment, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electronics devices or systems made up of several interconnected devices. The selected applicant must have the ability to train and direct subordinate staff members while supervising daily field work to ensure compliance with NCDOT Standards. This position will operate 24K signal bucket trucks. Additional responsibilities include construction of signal installations such as installation of aerial span wire and cable, installation of vehicle sensors in pavement, and the wiring of complex cabinets. Perform skilled work such as diagnosing malfunctions in both microprocessors based and solid state traffic signal controllers, and cabinets to the module level. This position will read and interpret drawing and wire diagrams to determine effects, necessary installation, and repair utilizing hand tools and field-testing equipment. Must respond to emergency maintenance calls during normal working hours and after normal working hours. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams. Knowledge of the National Electric Code. Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal technical supervision. Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions. Additional Expectations Employees must be able to lift up to 80 pounds, shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 60 feet in height without accommodations. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. The employees shall have the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signals and other traffic control devices. Employees will be expected to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and excessive heat conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. Safety toe shoes will be needed. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A CDL with no endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Safety toe shoes required. Associate’s degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
