  • Position will serve as an Electronics Technician II in the Carthage Traffic Services Unit.

This is a technical position for the installation, maintenance and repair of electronics, electronic traffic control systems, lighted signs, and roadway lighting. Position will also provide technical assistance for signal programing and installation. Duties performed include supervision and participation in installation of traffic signal equipment by wiring/installing signal heads, wiring detectors, and installing/wiring controllers; tracing out electrical wiring diagrams; locating issues; dismantling controls; replacing worn or faulty parts; reassembling; testing traffic control system; re-lamping/repairing roadway light fixtures; and troubleshooting/repairing roadway lighting control cabinets. Person in this position should have general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe/efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trades. Possess the ability to diagnose sources of equipment failure, as well as possess the ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. This position will act as lead electronics technician covering multiple counties in Division 8 ensuring that lower-level electronic technicians provide proper traffic signal maintenance, installations, repair of malfunctioning equipment, and ensure that the daily tasks are completed. This position may be asked to provide training and technical support for Electronic Technician I’s as needed. Must have the ability to use standard computer programs and keep electronic records. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. Applicant must possess the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signs and other traffic control devices and the ability to lift up to 85 lbs. or more shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 50 feet in height. Considerable knowledge of MUTCD and NCDOT traffic signal specification. Ability to trouble shoot nonstandard traffic electronic equipment, or equipment with incomplete or missing documentation. Must possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and hot outside conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. May be required to work during non-traditional work hours including weekends, holidays, nights and times of emergency. Overtime work may be required, and position is subject to emergency callback. Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams
Knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the installation, revision, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic traffic control systems
Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal technical supervision
Experience in applying the principles in the

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required. .

Associate’s degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
