Description of Work Are you passionate about the environment and want to make a difference? DEQ has an open opportunity for an Environmental Chemist (Flexible/Hybrid). It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The positions currently qualify for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management. The Electronics Technician III position is the shop lead on all ozone equipment and systems – to include the configuration of equipment, computers, data loggers, cellular modems, and certifying calibration and measurement equipment. This may include calibrating each unit against our primary standard unit (and our primary standard unit against the EPA standard unit), troubleshooting, performing repairs, upgrading installations each year, auditing our regional sites, evaluating new technologies for incorporation into the existing network, and providing technical assistance to the local programs, the Cherokee tribe, and university researchers. This position has both technical and technical leadership supervisory duties. This position coordinates work assignments for special ozone projects and develops technical procedures and methods for maintenance, repairs and installation to ensure proper operation of equipment in the air monitoring network. This position maintains traceability of ozone standards while instructing and training electronics technicians and field personnel and advises DAQ chemists concerning quality assurance development.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform routine maintenance, calibration and certification of ambient air monitoring sampling equipment, laboratory equipment, support equipment, transfer standards, and primary standards.
Communicate effectively with equipment vendors and manufacturers to solve complex electronic equipment and system issues.
Ensure the electronic devices and systems are calibrated against a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-traceable standard.
Ensure field sampling equipment is installed at the ambient air monitoring sites and meets or exceeds the siting criteria established in approved standard operating procedures, quality assurance project plans, EPA guidance documents, and EPA compendium method documents.
Document equipment maintenance activities, calibration data, and certification data in written and electronic formats.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Associate’s degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
