RP Instrument Technician EnergySolutions United States, Pennsylvania, Harrisburg Jun 11, 2025 Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities Responsible for testing, calibration, and repair of radiation monitoring equipment for both installed equipment in company facilities and portable/hand-held instrumentation including work in support of the company’s commercial instrumentation business. Handles radiation sources/calibrators and electronic test equipment safely and competently and ensures all work is completed in compliance with regulatory requirements and company procedures.
Performs calibration and repair of portable radiation monitoring equipment in the field or calibration shop setting.
Performs calibration and maintenance of installed radiation monitoring equipment installed in plant facilities including personnel and equipment contamination monitors, area radiation monitors, air sampling and monitoring equipment, and stack effluent monitoring equipment.
Responsible for the performance of HEPA filter penetration testing including building filter banks, portable ventilation units, and HEPA vacuum equipment.
Performs calibration and repair of radiation monitoring equipment in support of commercial instrumentation business including customer owned equipment and company owned equipment rented to customers.
Completes routine maintenance and cleaning of radiation monitoring equipment.
Completes pickup/delivery and response testing of portable radiation monitoring equipment.
Performs safe handling and use of sealed radiation sources and gamma calibrators.
Works safely in compliance with all company safety policies and promptly reporting any issues or accidents involving worker safety.
Stays current on
TDEC-DRH
license requirements for instrumentation operations, national instrumentation calibration standards, and EnergySolutions policies and procedures concerning proper use and calibration of radiation instrumentation.
Ships and receives radiation monitoring equipment in support of commercial instrumentation business.
Responsible for the completion of neat, accurate and thorough instrumentation test and calibration documentation including response test logs, calibration stickers, and calibration certificates.
Assists with maintenance of source and calibration tracking databases and generation of associated reports.
Completes source and instrumentation inventories.
Inventories and orders instrumentation repair parts using associated parts and procurement databases.
Develops and writes instrumentation calibration and operation procedures, instructions and other guidance and assists with training of instrument users.
Performs other instrumentation support duties as assigned by instrumentation department leadership.
Travel to other facility or customer sites may be required occasionally to perform installed equipment calibrations.
Must be able to work independently and resolve practical problems including instrumentation trouble-shooting and repair with minimal supervision including use of instrumentation manuals and/or circuit schematics and drawings.
Responsible for the quality of his/her own work and satisfying customer (internal and external) specifications.
Provides leadership, assistance, and training for Level 1 and 2 Instrumentation Technicians.
Performs other duties as assigned. Job Requirements/Skills Ability to work with a high level of attention to detail and to work reliably with minimal supervision
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Working knowledge of the interpretation and application of
TDEC-DRH
license requirements, national instrumentation calibration standards and company policies and procedures
Ability to complete re-certification measurements and data analysis of gamma calibrators
Knowledge of electrical and electronic components, circuits, and associated principles
Knowledge of proper care and use of Measuring and Test Equipment (M&TE)
Ability to interpret electronic drawings/schematics and troubleshoot radiation measuring instruments
Ability to consult with instrument manufacturers to trouble-shoot and repair faulty instrumentation
Skilled/Experienced with proper soldering techniques and component level repairs of radiation instrumentation
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and their use (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) and database applications
Demonstrated ability to take on additional non-routine instrumentation duties (e.g. gamma spectroscopy systems, parts management, control and tracking of M&TE calibrations). Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions Ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds; handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder
Ability to use hands and feet to accomplish tasks as assigned
Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend/stoop, crouch, squat/kneel, twist at the waist and balance
Ability to climb hand-over-hand on ladders, stairs, and scaffold
Ability to work at elevated heights including climbing fixed ladders for access to stack equipment calibration
Ability to effectively communicate; speaking, reading, understanding, writing and hearing clear English; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
Basic math and computer skills
Ability to perceive depth and adjust focus; basic hand/eye coordination
Ability to see close and distance, basic colors/shades, and peripheral vision
Ability to work inside an office, outside, and in extreme temperatures
Ability to work with moving objects, hazardous machines, and on slippery/uneven walking surfaces
Ability to wear protective equipment such as: goggles, hard hat, gloves, steel toe boots with or without shank, and chemical resistant coveralls
Ability to work with others; ability to operate equipment
Ability to work around ionizing radiation and work with ionizing radiation sources
Ability to read small text, blueprints, documents, procedures, and instrument readouts
Ability to complete Certified Radworker training and Instrumentation Technician training program. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements
Education High School diploma or GED
AA in Electronics Technology or similar desired Certifications None required Required Experience A minimum of 6 years of experience as an instrumentation calibration technician or closely related experience
