Perform fusion splicing of single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables in outdoor (aerial and underground) environments. Install, prep and terminate fiber optic enclosures, panels and splice cases. Conduct OTDR, light source/power meter and fiber characterization testing to ensure splices meet client specifications and industry standards. Diagnose and repair issues in newly installed or existing fiber networks. Accurately record splicing details, fiber assignments and test results using company forms or digital reporting systems. Maintain up-to-date daily production logs and as-built documentation. Properly set up work zones, traffic control and utilize PPE at all times. Maintain, calibrate and safely operate fusion splicers, cleavers, OTDRs and other fiber tools and equipment. Report and coordinate calibration needs and equipment repair as required. Communicate effectively with project managers, field supervisors and construction crews to coordinate splicing work with broader project timelines. Support field quality control inspections and make corrections promptly when needed.
Requirements:
Excellent communication and customer service skills. Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets the company’s minimum safety standards. Minimum 1 year of hands-on fiber splicing experience (fusion and/or mechanical). Familiar with OTDR testing, light source and power meter testing and interpreting fiber optic schematics. Understanding of fiber color codes and splicing matrix sheets. Proficient in the operation and maintenance of splicing and testing equipment (e.g., fusion splicers, OTDRs, cleavers). Proficient in Internet-related applications such as email and web browsers. Thorough understanding of basic hand tools and power tools.
Able to meet physical requirements:
climb ladders, work in confined spaces and/or various heights, lift and/or move up to 50 lbs., squat, kneel, bend, crawl and stand for long periods of time. Able to work outdoors in various weather conditions, in confined spaces, and at heights when necessary (e.g., bucket trucks, ladders). Self-starter with a positive attitude and willingness to work.
Schedule:
Regularly scheduled to work 40 hours a week. Willing to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays as needed in addition to regular travel. As part of your job duties, you may be required to travel depending on the project needs. When work is slower in your market, there may be an occasion that you would be asked to travel to another market location to help with the workload either in state or out of state. Employment is contingent on the successful completion of a pre-employment screen, including a drug test and an acceptable driving record.
