Job Description:
Thisposition supports the client Research & Development department. Theteam is an innovation center that facilitates the research,pre-operational development and assessment and demonstration ofsituational awareness technologies for Transmission andDistribution. Areas of focus include synchrophasor technology, nextgeneration control center functionalities, cyber security testing,new visualization approaches, DERMS platform evaluation, dataanalytics as well as modeling and simulation including via a RealTime Digital Simulator (RTDS) with hardware-in-the-loop testingcapability.
Summary of Position Duties:
This position providessupport to the Grid Operations and Planning Research area withinSouthern Company’s Research & Development. The engineer willsupport projects and in time lead efforts to deploy and evaluatethe performance of emerging technologies in this arena. Theposition is primarily focused on tools to support grid operationswith an emphasis on power system analysis, power system modelingand simulation, “big data” analytics, and visualization. However,the work may involve projects in other areas of the power system,including integrating Distribution Management Systems (DMS) andDistributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS). Knowledgeof databases, data structures, computer networking is desirable aswell as an aptitude to apply engineering analysis to solveproblems.
Education Requirements:
Master of Science in ElectricalEngineering (EE) required. Specialization in Power Systems desired.
Training in/experience with computer programming (Python, C#, SQL)desired. Training in/experience with data science desired JobResponsibilities. Develop research plan to evaluate new technology.
Manage multiple tasks at one time. Provide documentation of studyassumptions and methods used to arrive at results. Provideinformative reports and presentations on projects. Some overnighttravel may be required but this is not extensive.
Knowledge, Skills& Abilities:
Must demonstrate good communication skills, bothinternal and external to the company. Must have excellentorganizational skills. Must possess analytical skills as well asthe ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Must workwell in a team environment.
