Controls EngineerJob Description Under general direction, the R D Controls Engineer will collaborate with Engineers to evaluate and design advanced technology products. The role involves designing various electrical harnesses and control systems, calibrations, and algorithms needed for electrification efforts of business units’ products. Responsibilities + Collaborate with team members to enhance skills and knowledge, applying them to projects that produce results greater than individual efforts. + Design and develop all aspects of electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery with a team. + Integrate various hybrid electric systems into truck chassis and other business unit products. + Partner with multiple business units to understand products and collaborate on solutions. + Design, implement, and tune control loops using PID, discrete time operations, ladder logic, scripting, and structured programming language. + Design and implement Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). + Create harness designs including high voltage harnesses and connectors. + Integrate generators and motors into vehicle systems. + Configure inverters and drives for electric drivetrains. + Drive design choices to maximize safety and value to the company. + Troubleshoot issues with hardware and processes. + Research and continuously learn new technologies for incorporation into current and new product designs. + Teach or instruct others to maintain systems produced. Essential Skills + Ability to work in a team, learn and adapt quickly to new information. + Knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, CAN networks, electric vehicles or similar complex systems. + Experience using graphical programming environments like MATLAB, Simulink, CodeSys or similar. + Experience with CAN Bus, CANopen, j1939, OBD, SPN, PGN, DTC SPN, and similar. + Familiarity with structured language programming and software development operations. + Experience with high and low voltage electric drive systems including motors, inverters, and battery packs. + Ability to read, interpret and create drawings, schematics, operator’s manuals, and assembly instructions. + Proficiency in using hand tools such as ratchet drivers, wrenches, hammers, punches, soldering irons, de-soldering tools, and various crimpers. + Ability to perform basic measurements using tape measure, protractor, calipers, micrometers, multimeter, o-scope and other measuring devices. + Skilled with the use of personal computers, including JDE, and standard office software (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access). + Knowledge of setup and calibration of inverters. + Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. + Strong planning and project management skills. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field is required. Equivalent experience may be considered. + Minimum 2 years of previous experience in a vehicle or similar complex system, designing electrical systems or control systems. + Ability to work irregular and/or long hours that may include weekends and/or holidays as project requirements dictate. + Ability to travel independently by air and automobile, including international travel. + Ability to maintain an insurable driving record. Work Environment The position requires working in a dynamic and collaborative environment, utilizing advanced technologies and equipment. The work may involve irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, and occasional international travel. Dress code is business casual.
