Controls Engineer Job Description The Controls Engineer is responsible for providing technical support for power and distribution systems planning and management, electrical control systems, process planning, and process improvements. This role involves different phases of engineering projects from concept through ongoing production. You will be engaged in activities such as designing and evaluating processes, developing logic for programmable logic controllers, implementing electrical controls or distribution systems, and preparing specifications for bids and proposals. Additionally, the role includes maintaining technological control over all processes and ensuring proper documentation for electrical control systems. Responsibilities Assist plant maintenance in troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems. Develop hardware requirements for electrical control systems based on process inputs and outputs. Develop control programs for programmable logic controllers and operator interface terminals. Calculate and design power requirements for new power feed installations. Investigate and determine the adaptability of new electrical technologies. Manage new installations and updates of the plant’s power distribution systems. Monitor and implement corrective actions to maintain the plant’s power factor. Communicate power demand fluctuations to local power utilities. Monitor power systems for unusual demands and report to management. Manage and test the plant’s fire protection system. Plan and design new control systems for equipment and processes. Develop and implement an electrical preventative maintenance program. Participate in cost and productivity improvement projects. Determine efficient workstation layouts for optimum line balance. Plan and design new processes and equipment. Monitor and control fabrication progress and estimate project costs. Participate in productivity and quality improvements. Analyze manufacturing proposals for feasibility and cost efficiency. Evaluate and recommend maintenance for process equipment and electrical systems. Provide solutions to reduce defects and improve quality and productivity. Reduce work-in-process and control operating costs. Interpret instructions and company policy to employees. Document engineering information for manufacturing processes. Essential Skills Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with five years’ experience or a Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering with three years’ experience. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of PC software applications such as spreadsheets, word processors, and project management tools. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Independent thought, good judgment, problem-solving skills, and the ability to prioritize multiple projects. Experience with AutoCAD or similar computer-aided drafting tools. Project management experience and excellent organizational skills. Knowledgeable in National Electrical Codes and industrial wiring practices. Training and experience in developing logic for programmable logic controllers and operator interface terminals. Experience troubleshooting industrial electrical control systems. Experience in power systems planning and distribution. Knowledge of various motor types including AC, DC, single-phase, three-phase, and synchronous motors. Additional Skills & Qualifications Working knowledge of SolidWorks. Knowledgeable in pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems. Experience in control systems integration. Work Environment This role involves working within a manufacturing facility, requiring familiarity with industrial electrical control systems and equipment. The work environment includes interactions with various functional areas within the company and occasional communication with external representatives. The position requires no travel restrictions and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
