Department Summary:
The SubstationEngineering department delivers comprehensive, multi-disciplinedengineering design and leadership for high-voltage electricdistribution projects associated with company-owned and operatedsubstations throughout Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The team isresponsible for both in-house and consultant-led designs,supporting new substation construction as well as upgrades,repairs, and modifications to existing facilities. Key areas offocus include substation layout design, project scoping, groundinganalysis, standards development, procurement and constructionsupport, and overall project execution. This position is part ofthe Layout Engineering group, supporting capital projects acrossthe service territory.
Role Summary:
The Senior Electrical Engineerwill lead and support multiple substation projects, acting as thesubject matter expert in layout engineering. This role involvesidentifying and developing the engineering and construction scopenecessary for successful project execution, coordinating andmanaging both internal and external engineering services, andproviding authoritative technical review and guidance throughoutthe project lifecycle. The engineer will collaborate closely withProject Managers and Engineers on procurement, contracting, andconstruction activities to ensure alignment with project goals.
Additionally, they will oversee the completion of all closeouttasks, including the preparation of record drawings, testdocumentation, and redlines, ensuring a thorough and accurateproject wrap-up. The Senior Electrical Engineer will representclient as the design authority for substation layout and willregularly report project status, risks, and progress related toscope, quality, cost, and schedule to their supervisor. This rolerequires frequent travel to project sites for activities such aspre-engineering assessments, construction reviews, milestoneinspections, technical troubleshooting, and final walk-downs.
Candidates must be comfortable working in rugged, industrialenvironments, including undeveloped sites, active constructionzones, and energized substations. Safety is a top priority,especially when working near live electrical equipment.
Essentialduties and responsibilities:
Prepare specifications for purchasesof electrical equipment and materials and estimating material,labor, or construction costs for budget preparation. Ensurecompliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements bydirecting or coordinating installation, manufacturing,construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testingactivities. Ensure that installation and operations conform tostandards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systemsspecifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps and -Investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner.
Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discussexisting or potential engineering products or projects and monitorproject progress and budget and prepare reports for uppermanagement. Perform a wide range of engineering tasks by operatingcomputer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
Design, maintain, implement, or improve electrical instruments,facilities, components, equipment products, or systems forindustrial, commercial, or domestic purposes. Design, control, andimplement electrical systems and products and serve as the primarypoint of contact with clients for all electrical engineeringproject matters. Manage the development and implementation ofelectrical systems.
Skills:
knowledge/skills/abilities Knowledge ofapplicable codes related to electronic engineering. Proficient indesign and calculation software. Written and verbal communicationskills. Organizational skills and attention to detail. Analyticaland problem-solving skills. Knowledge of the theory and practice ofelectric utility distribution planning, construction, operation,and maintenance. Working knowledge of electric utility operation(i.e., generation, transmission, and distribution of three phasealternating current power). Knowledge of distribution planningprinciples is an asset Expert Knowledge -Software experience withMicroStation, ProjectWise, SAP.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree infrom an ABET accredited program OR Engineering degree from anon-ABET accredited program. Candidates for technical engineerpositions also need to have relevant experience, as well asproficiency in basic computer programs such as the MS Office suite.
Technical engineers should also have excellent analysis,problem-solving, and communication skills. They should also workwell independently with minimal supervision, as well as in a teamsetting with other engineers and related colleagues.
