Energy Efficiency Technologies and Practices for Building Energy Systems (e.g. Boilers and Steam Systems, Compressed Air Systems, Energy Intensive Processes, Fuel and Feedstock Flexibility, Motors, Fans, and Pumps, Process Heating, and Energy Management & Automation) Essential Job Duties The Clean Energy Engineer, Clean Power & Industrial Efficiency will report to the Program Director for the Clean Power and Energy Efficiency Program and will initially support the Center’s work on the EnergizeNC project (the State of NC program under the US EPA Solar for All program) . The position will also support work on the US DOE-funded Onsite Energy Technical Assistance Partnership and other projects, and contribute to delivery of other relevant technical services offered by the Center.
This position requires the candidate to have technical expertise in distributed onsite energy systems modeling and analysis, and/or experience in onsite energy project engineering, procurement and construction ( EPC).
Senior level hires in this position will also support management oversight of the several projects as well as to help develop new project and service opportunities. Senior level hires will serve as Principal Investigator on sponsored research projects.
Primary duties will include, but are not limited to: Working with the EnergizeNC team to conduct distributed onsite energy systems modeling and analysis, and advising on onsite energy project engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the multi-family housing and community solar portions of EnergizeNC (40%)
Engaging with companies and organizations and providing technical services to evaluate feasibility of investment in distributed generation or efficiency technologies at their site (15%)
Supporting responses to consumers, industry representatives, nonprofit organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders involved in regulatory proceedings or other relevant policy forums (10%)
Research and technical reports and papers on issues affecting distributed generation and energy efficiency (5%)
Education of stakeholders, seeking of new project or assistance opportunities, and developing funding proposals that are in line with the mission of the NCCETC (10%)
Supporting administrative functions for assigned projects, including preparation of regular progress reports, quarterly project reports, and budgets as needed and required by funding agencies (5%); and
Updating program technical resources and publications (5%) Other Responsibilities The following are other work and responsibilities that the position will involve (10%), as needed: Supporting the Center’s applied research activities relating to clean and renewable energy technology, grid integration of distributed generation, microgrid deployment, and advanced building and systems energy efficiency technologies
Collaborating with other NCCETC programs and NCSU departments on projects with broader sustainability objectives
Assisting in maintaining a contacts database of industry; federal, state, and regional governmental contacts; and other stakeholder contacts
Mentoring student interns; interacting with faculty, undergraduate and graduate students at the University as requested to support research projects related to distributed generation
Tracking team’s client focused activities including requests for assistance, assistance provided, meetings, site visits, technical services and policy support Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering management, environmental science or a related field plus 2 years of experience Senior level position requires post-baccalaureate credentials (Master’s Degree or higher) or Bachelor’s Degree plus at least 3 years of significant work experience in distributed generation modeling and analysis, and/or project engineering, procurement and construction, including combined heat and power, solar PV, fuel cells, district energy, energy storage and microgrids or other related fields Other Required Qualifications Strong technical background and experience in energy engineering, energy efficiency, and sustainability principles
Skills to perform distributed generation modeling and analysis of clean and renewable energy technologies
Life cycle cost analysis and emissions calculation proficiency
Strong project management, writing and oral communication skills, excellent organizational and analytical skills with attention to detail, and ability to work independently on defined tasks and with others in a team setting Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related engineering field; Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
Candidates with detailed and current, knowledge and skills in technical analysis of distributed generation and energy efficiency project development preferred
Candidates with detailed understanding of electric and gas utility rates and various charges, ratchets, fees, etc. that affect energy costs preferred
Candidates with working knowledge of North Carolina, other states and federal policies affecting distributed energy, electricity markets and regulations preferred
Experience with renewable energy, utility grid and/or microgrid energy and economic performance modeling and analysis
Experience with state
