Amazon is looking for a detail-oriented individual to join ournorthern VA Data Center Engineering Operations Team. This committedgroup works to maintain the critical physical infrastructure thatsupports Amazon Web Services. Specifically, this team works toensure that the data center’s Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbingsystems (MEP) operate at 100% availability while maintainingfirst-class customer service to the teams and groups within thedata centers. The DCEO Chief Engineer (CE) is responsible forensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safetyequipment within the data center is operating at peak efficiency.

This involves both planned preventative maintenance of equipment,daily corrective work, and emergency response to emergent issues.

The CE serves as an expert technical resource reporting to a site’sData Center Facility Manager and interacting with onsiteEngineering Operations Technicians (EOT) and any third partyvendors. They are expected to be a singular focal point for allfacility operations within a given data center and to supportAmazon within its owned and operated data centers. Data centerequipment that supports mission-critical servers must maintainbetter than 99.999% uptime. Also expected from the CE is theability to manage small-to-medium large impact projects fromconception to completion. These projects can involve large amountsof independent work as well as collaboration with external supportgroups including engineering, automation, processing, and financein both local and global settings. The CE will be tasked withcreating and delivering on key milestones, obtaining and trackingquotes for all necessary costs, and documenting project results forfuture implementation at other facilities. The goals of suchprojects are for the CE to drive innovation and resiliency whilereducing operational costs in the facilities. The CE directs,trains and supports EOT’s in their role of providing hands-onelectrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting and operations.

Implementation and execution of site/equipment-specific trainingexercises is also expected. This equipment includes, but is notlimited to, stand-by diesel generators, switchgear, UPS’s, PDU’s,AHU’s, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps,motors, VFD’s, and building automation systems.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations and maintenance of mechanical andelectrical equipment in a data center.
  • Operate independently withlimited direct management
  • Act as an escalation point for allfacilities-related issues within the data center, escalating to theData Center Facility Manager as needed
  • Perform root causeanalysis of equipment failures
  • Troubleshoot and report offacility and data sever-level events within internal SLA
  • Createand deploy new standard practices for Engineering OperationsTechnicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams
  • Providetraining and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians
  • Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendor and Amazonstaff
  • Ensure all security procedures are adhered to by vendor andAmazon staff
  • Utilize internal CMMS to manage building workflows
  • Communicate complex technical information to a non-technicalaudience
  • Regularly utilize Microsoft Office suite (Outlook,Excel, PPT, Word) and other computer programs such as PDF, QUIP,and other dashboards and scheduling tooling.
  • Instruct others onscheduling, ticketing, and provide mentorship in developingsolutions.

  • Work at depths, such as under raised floors Thisposition requires that the candidate selected be a US Citizen andmust currently possess an active Top Secret security clearance.

Theposition further requires that, after start, the selected candidateobtain and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance withpolygraph and satisfy other security related requirements. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • 4 years ofrelevant work experience in a data center or other criticalenvironment or 8 years of Technical (Military/Trade School)training and/or experience with relevant data center facilitiesequipment
  • Minimum education of High School diploma or equivalent
  • Current, active US Government Security Clearance of Top Secret orabove
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associates or Bachelors inapplicable engineering field or mechanical or electrical trades
  • PMP, Lean Six Sigma, or equivalent certifications
  • Proficiencywith MS Office tools (Word, Excel), and use of computerized/onlineticketing systems.
  • Operating engineering licenses such as
DC II,DC

III, or equivalent

  • Stationary Engineering or BuildingEngineering License, Electrical or Mechanical Journeyman License,CFC license, and/or
NFPA 70E
