Palm Beach County’s Department of Airports is seeking a Senior Professional Engineer to lead the design and construction oversight of complex airport development projects. This is a high-impact role for a licensed professional committed to engineering excellence, project management, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Senior Professional Engineer with our Department of Airports, your role will be integral to the planning, design and development of the County’s aviation infrastructure.

Primary responsibilities include:

Project Leadership Manage teams of design professionals, construction managers, and general contractors throughout all phases of airport construction projects. Design and Constructability Oversight Perform comprehensive reviews of final bid documents, conduct constructability assessments, and participate in public bid processes to ensure readiness and regulatory compliance. Contract and Change Order Management Review, negotiate, and process change orders, contractor pay estimates, and construction schedules. Ensure alignment with contract terms and budget constraints. Stakeholder Communication Translate technical plans and specifications into functional and operational outcomes for project stakeholders. Ensure designs meet user needs and business goals. Collaboration and Problem Solving Attend and lead coordination meetings to resolve design issues, inspections, County procedures, and utility conflicts. Collaborate with consultants, County staff, municipalities, and agencies to maintain compliance with regulations and standards. Regulatory and Permitting Oversight Coordinate the project permitting process with local, state, and federal regulatory bodies. Monitor timelines and ensure all necessary approvals are secured. Procurement and Budget Evaluation Evaluate and negotiate fees for additional professional services. Monitor budgets and approve close-out documentation and final pay applications. Staff Development Supervise and mentor construction coordination staff, assigning workloads, overseeing performance, and guiding development in alignment with project milestones.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires you to possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field. Additionally, you will need a minimum of five (5) years of experience in related professional engineering work; however, if you possess a related Master’s Degree, the position will require only three (3) years of experience in professional traffic engineering. One (1) year of experience in the supervisory aspects of engineering are also required. Additionally, you must be licensed as Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Florida or licensed as a P.E. in another state and obtain a license as a P.E. in the State of Florida within 11 months of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are highly desirable: Experience in construction/project management involving design/construction projects at medium or large hub airports Experience in administering construction management at risk or design/build contracts Experience in procurement of design and construction services Certified Construction Manager (CCM) through the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) or similar Construction Manager certification.

Annually, PBI handles approximately 140,000 aircraft operations, made up of both air carrier and general aviation activity, and over 8.5 million passengers.
