Job Description

Manager Manufacturing Engineering at Old Town Canoe Company in Old Town, Maine, United States Job Description Description Manages work team responsible for developing, implementing, trouble shooting, and improving methods, processes, tooling and fixtures to support manufacturing and assembly. Performs advanced analysis/measurement and troubleshooting of manufacturing deficiencies, and drives improvements and recommendations, where needed. Maximizes efficiency and cost savings by analyzing layout of equipment, workflow, assembly methods, and work force utilization. Determines parts and tools needed in order to achieve manufacturing goals according to product specification. Oversees multiple projects to ensure the new products are completed to established specification, scheduling and product cost requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversees the designs of simple to complex manufacturing processes, methods, tooling, fixturing, and equipment to achieve productivity, quality, cost and organizational objectives. Optimizes the footprint and flow of manufacturing activities through the implementation of lean concepts to promote efficiency, quality and effectiveness.

  • Leads the management of projects from conception to completion by managing plans, milestones, reviewing assignments to ensure successful production launch. Ensures projects are meeting productivity, efficiency, quality and organizational goals.
  • Drives innovation and integration of new technologies into projects and activities in the mechanical manufacturing engineering technologies and methodologies.
  • Reviews and evaluates designs and project activities for compliance with technology and development guidelines and standards; provides tangible feedback to improve product quality. Plans and allocates resources for new projects and future growth.
  • Partners with other functional management to resolve issues, plan strategies and implement process improvement.
  • Functions as an internal expert and liaison between the manufacturing, engineering and design staff concerning troubleshooting/issues, product design, functional requirements, quality and efficiency.
  • Provides technical expertise, and acts as a subject matter expert internally or externally as needed to solve difficult technical issues and meet project, operating and engineering needs.
  • Performs advanced analysis to create metrics and measure manufacturing performance and standards while identifying equipment and process flow bottlenecks.
    Ensures application of ergonomics, workflow and accident prevention measures to maintain efficient and safe utilization of plant facilities. Plans the effective utilization of production facilities and employees.
  • Develops and proactively initiates process improvement actions to develop advanced cost-effective solutions, improve quality and delivery as well as reduce process variation and waste.
  • Investigates and stay current with core technologies associated with current and planned products.
  • Ensures compliance with established industry safety and design standards and guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages, controls and recommends budgets within approved guidelines.

  • Develops and revises departmental policies, procedures and guidelines to meet business needs.
  • In partnership with human resources, performs human resources responsibilities for staff which includes but is not limited to the following: hiring and terminating employees, promotions/pay adjustments, staff development, performance evaluations, resolution of employee concerns and disciplinary counseling.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Education:

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.

Experience:

Typically requires a minimum of 7 years in a manufacturing engineering lead or management role that includes experience in manufacturing or assembling products with integrated electronics.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Management skills and experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively lead and develop direct reports to accomplish manufacturing and assembly cost, quality, and efficiency objectives and organizational initiatives and goals.

  • Exhibits comprehensive knowledge of mechanical and manufacturing engineering principles, concepts, practices and theories, particularly relative to DFMA, mistake-proofing, and poke-yoke and other six sigma techniques.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in successfully leading projects from conception to completion and collaborating effectively with various teams for optimal results.
  • Expert knowledge of manufacturing and assembly concepts relative to plastic injection molded parts, polymers and metals and mechanical assembly technologies, as well as mechanical test equipment.
  • General business acumen that demonstrates an understanding of the impact of product costs, manufacturing labor and overhead, and tooling depreciation.
