  • Anticipated Vacancy
  • Position will serve as District Engineer for Chatham, Randolph, and Montgomery County and will manage operations including encroachments, subdivision reviews, driveway permits, outdoor advertising, junkyard permits, oversize and overweight permits, and road additions.

Position will direct other construction engineering functions involving difficult engineering work and make sound recommendations and decisions on engineering problems. The position will direct, supervise, and evaluate the work of engineers, engineering technicians, and administrative personnel. Additional responsibilities include fiscal and personnel management and serving as point of contact for local governments, planning organizations, and the general public to provide maintenance and construction information, coordination and service delivery. Position includes both administrative and management duties. Position is located in the Asheboro District Office. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Experience in reviewing project plans and specifications for locally-managed projects, subdivisions, right of way encroachments and driveway permit applications for compliance with all applicable design and safety standards
Customer service experience with internal and external customers including Division personnel and management, Municipal and County governments, consultants and contractors, elected officials and the general public including explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups
Experience making recommendations and decisions for simple or complex projects
Experience in the supervision, direction, management and training of subordinate employees to achieve established project delivery metrics
Experience with interpreting and communicating verbally and in writing details of plans, project documents, policies, and procedures to convey information to consultants, department personnel, and others

Additional Expectations:

A full knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as related to the location, design, construction and maintenance of highways. Ability to understand, explain, and administer contracts; interpret plans, provisions and specifications, policies, procedures, regulations and laws as well as strong written and verbal skills. Ability to prepare documents that are legally sound. Registration as a Professional Engineer by NC Board of Examiners for Engineers & Surveyors preferred. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required for this position. Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience including three (3) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
