INTERNAL

POSTING-Only temporary or permanent NCDOT employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126 May ” This position serves as the Division Maintenance Engineer. Responsibilities include management and supervision of Division 10’s County Maintenance Units, Interstate Maintenance, Bridge Maintenance Units, Equipment Units, Roadside Environmental, Traffic Services and the Intelligence Transportation System/IMAP. Performs advanced engineering calculations; provides engineering technical assistance; assists in the development and implementation of various Division programs. Responds to inquiries from the public, DOT management and news media, etc. regarding DOT policies and procedures, Division projects, plans and proposed work. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts, maintenance practices and theories used in maintenance of all roadway assets and experience planning, developing, designing, scheduling, tracking and completing projects, independently or with minimal supervision
Experience in performing engineering analysis and preparing technical, statistical, and managerial reports
Experience supervising, motivating, counseling, and training other engineers and technicians
Experience collaborating with others in finding solutions to controversial or sensitive matters that establish precedents
Experience reviewing engineered plans and details to determine compliance and compatibility with construction and engineering principles and maintenance standards, codes, designs, and statutes

Additional Expectations:

Preference will be given to registered Professional Engineers. This position requires the ability to independently perform engineeringanalysesand prepare technical, statistical and managerial reports. The employee must have the ability to communicate well both orally and in written form. The position requires the ability to maintain multiple projects and complete difficult assignments within specified time requirements. The employee must direct the work of other engineers, apply engineering principles to difficult or complex engineering problems, and make sound recommendations and decisions. Employee must be able to manage and direct annual budget for the reporting units. Prefer experience with SAP/R3 and BEACON. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of seven years progressive engineering experience including four years of supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
